Can a 3/4 ton Dodge Hemi pull a 2980RL?
Has anyone had any problems with doing this or do you have any advice?
Thanks

Can you give a little more info on the truck? We had a 30' Terry that was about the same as you're looking at and a 95 GMC 3/4t gasser. The truck would pull the 5er, just. In the mountains it really was poor. The other thing you need to consider is the trucks capacities, ie. payload and GCWR. The older the vehicle, the lower the capacities. The 2980 has a advertised pin weight of 1880#, so I would recommend a vehicle that had a minimum payload capacity of approximately 2800/3000#. With this payload capacity, GCVR, and other weight oriented capacities will take care of themselves.

Skip, the 2005 specs show the pinweight on a 2980 to be 2300. I think you were looking at the 2950 column? UVW is 10,060 with GVWR of 12,700. Total length is 32'0".

Right Steve, looked in the wrong place, thanks. That would change my recommendation to 3300# to 3500# minimum.

Snookie: The '05 2500 hemi is rated to pull 10,600 with a 4.10 rear gear and 8600 with 3.73. Go to Dodge truck site and you can bring up their towing guide. http://www-5.dodge.com/vehsuite/Towi...d=u&rid=utheir

Add battery, propane bottles, food, gear, maybe some water to the UVW of 10,060 and it likely will be around 11,500 ready for a weekend or vacation. Maybe a little more. I think our 2880RL was right around 11,200 for weekend/vacation, if I recall. And it's a foot shorter than the 2980RL.

2005 RAM 2500
ST, Quad Cab, 4x4, 6.25 Ft, 5.7L HEMI Magnum V8 Engine, 5-Speed Manual Transmission
With 4.10 Axle Ratio You Can Tow 10750 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR)[i]=8800
Payload[i]=2724
Curb Weight[i]=6076
Curb WeightFront/Rear=3496/2580
GAWR[i]Front/Rear=5200/6000
Gross Combination Weight Rating(GCWR)[i]=17000
With 3.73 Axle Ratio You Can Tow 8750 lbs
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating(GVWR)[i]=8800
Payload[i]=2724
Curb Weight[i]=6076
Curb WeightFront/Rear=3496/2580
GAWR[i]Front/Rear=5200/6000
Gross Combination Weight Rating(GCWR)[i]=15000
The payload is 2724, minus the pin weight leaves 424# for everything carried in the vehicle, including driver/passengers,hitch, the extra weight on the pin when the 5er is loaded, etc. The info in Steves post along with this tells me the truck would be overloaded [IAW specs] with this 5er. A 1t SRW might be a wiser choice.

I think you all are right. I would only add that I'm a firm believer in the 80% rule: Only tow up to 80% of your capacity, you'll be much happier (and safer!) with the overall performance of the package. Our rig has a 5er towing capacity of 15K, and as Steve noted, typical weekend trip weight is probably about 11.5K, max is 12.5K for our 2980. 12K is 80% of the 15K max. I like to have the space.
