How Tall Is Your Monty?
Has anyone measured the height of their Monty? I know the specs show 12'9" to the top of the A/C, but mine is several inches taller than this.

Best we could come up with, after several measuring attempts, was 12' 11", or 13'. We had the low profile air conditioner which was changed out under warranty to the full sized one, that added a bit, plus the axle situation may or may not have changed the height.

I would like to measure mine, as I believe the specs say mine is 13' 1" to the top of the A/C, however, while going through the Adarondacks, I went under a bridge that the clearance was listed s 12' 9", and didnt realize it until the way back. I didnt hit anything, so either my Monty is shorter than the specs, or the clearance on this bridge is higher.

Those measurements are usually at the lowest point which is often near the far edge of the road.

Hi everyone,
I just talked to a good friend of mine that works for the Illinois Highway Department. He told me that the markings on bridges and overpasses in Illinois are pretty accurate. He also stated that if a bridge is marked 13' and they just resurfaced the road it could be less. He also said that if they do repave the road or make any changes they remeasure again, but usually it takes a few weeks until they get the overpass posted again. He also stated that he thought that the Interstate roads have a safety factor they use, by that he said if a overpass is marked 13' the actual height might be four or five inches higher. However he said if an overpass anywhere is marked 12.9' and your rig is 13.0' he would recommend you don't take a chance trying to pass under it.
He said in the bigger cityies like Chicago, St Louis, etc. the cities pave resurface their own roads and they are never measured accurately and to be really cautious.
When I schedule a trip and am going to use a GPS unit or even Trailer life, when I plug this in I mark not to route me under any low overpasses, ferries, etc.
I hope this helps someone. Happy Easter.
Bill

What would be the best way to measure the Montana; in two parts, from the ground to the highest point and then the AC? Or is there a better way? I must confess that I look at trees and overpasses in a different light since I bought our Montana!

I wouldn't trust the spec's. for the simple reason one doesn't know what the mfg. measures. I'm quite sure they didn't measure mine hooked to my truck! I'm 13'-2" to highest point of front A/C. The spec's say 12'-9" high and 37'-1" long, but my tape measure says 38'-9" long. I wonder why the sales contract says it's 34 feet???

The only problem I have with that 12' 9" bridge is I go there wuite often, and that is the only road in or out. It is a 90 minute drive frim my house. To go around would literalyly add 2-3 hours to the trip.
I am screwed either way I guess.

I also have found that my Monty is taller then the 12'9" in the specs. I had a carport for my other 5er and I know it was 13'2" high. I had to modify it to get the Monty in. Mine is a 3255 which is spec'ed at 32', it tapes out at 35'4" not counting the ladder. I guess we all got our monies worth. By the way if you travel to Mackinaw City in Mich be aware there is a very low bridge by the Fort. I saw a Monty owner take the roof completely off last summer. I believe it is posted to be 11' but a lot of RV'ers seem to not see the signs. It gets a couple a year. If you get off I75 S.B do not turn right to go into Mackinaw.

I set a lazer level on top the highest point...the AC and used the lazer point to give me an accurate reference to mesure to the ground with a tape measure. I came up with 12'8.5" call it 12'9".

My 2004 Monty measured 12'7" to the top of the a/c. I found it very useful to get a spare oil change sticker and put the measurement on it with a magic marker. Also covert it to meters and put that on it too. Place the sticker on your windshield for easy reference. It really came in handy in Canada.

Wordsmith, I laid a long 2x4 across the ac unit then dropped a tape measure down to Vicki who pulled it down to the ground and read the height. That is probably not exact but should be close enough. Ours specs at 12' 8" and measured 12'7". I measured ours in the driveway when not hitched but it would be best to measure when hitched. If it's hitched nose low then the rear of the rig will be a bit higher behind the axles. Vice versa for nose high.
