Share our experience
Hi everyone, just wanted to share What my wife and I do in our spare time. We tow a 15 shell( racing crew boats) trailer around the country from April to November. Most regattas are 3 to 4 day events. The 8 crew plus coxswain are 65 ft long made of carbon fiber. The length of our rig is 78 ft long which can be a challenge driving in some cities like Boston. We get ask a lot at truck stops what we’re hauling so it takes a while to buy fuel. The team we haul for is high school with about 120 kids On the team. We have been doing this for almost 5 years and really enjoy the kids and the many coaches on the team. Our tow vehicle is a 2015 f350 diesel plus we also own a 2010 Montana 2955rl which we use mainly in the winter.

Welcome to the forum! And some people think a 40' Montana is a challenge to tow

Thanks for your service to the youth of our country. Being around a lot of our grandkids friends, middle school through post college, keeps us aware that the youth of today is not going to hell in a hand basket. In fact, even though we don't always agree, we find them refreshing and fun.

Thank you for the kind words. Our granddaughter rowed for Upper Arlington for 4 years and now rows at a college in Michigan. The kids on this team are so responsible and just great kids we felt we had 120 grandkids. We enjoy being on the road and they trust us with all there equipment. When trailer is loaded with 15 boats plus oars and outriggers including the trailer it’s a million dollars worth so we really take it seriously. Most all our trips are at night to get to the regatta site by normally 6am so some long days and nights for sure!

We are in Philly right now. Really Cool watching the rowers going up and down the river here. I wondered how they moved them around for competitions.
Welcome to the Club

Very cool supporting the kids. I have a niece who rows crew for Georgetown. And to think, I thought these Montanas were long.......That has to be challenging at 78'

78 feet long, is that even legal? Or do they leave you alone, because there is not much you can do to change the sport and make the shells shorter? I met my wife in 1976 at UCLA, and she was on the women's crew team. Too bad you have to stay in hotels all the time when going to these regattas? Maybe you should buy another truck, and bring the RV to all the events? :-)

Under the surface transportation assistance act of 1982 (STAA) boat transporters are allowed 75ft plus 4ft overhang beyond trailer rear. Pretty crazy long, the cities we go to like Boston,Camden,NJ, Sarasota,Chattanooga,Cleveland are pretty tough to get in to. Most regattas have specific routes for us and police watch pretty close. That’s pretty cool that your wife rowed for UCLA, we really enjoy watching our Granddaughter and her teammates. I guess we’ll do this as long as they will have us. We charge nothing but they pay fuel and motel we buy our on food. The school requires 5 million umbrella insurance in which I understand. For two people in there mid 60s we’re having a great time just a lot of long 15 20 hours driving night and days but I have a great copilot

That's cool, helping kids, we used to do that with our kids running their soccer and gymnastic clubs. We love rowing, and we listened to "The Boys in the Boat" on one of our RV trips. You should definitely listen to the audio version if you get the chance?

We will have to find the audio version I’ll check amazon, everyone has read the book but me. We think rowing is the ultimate team sport and your right it’s all about the kids. Last weekend we took 4 8s for a scrimmage with Cincinnati rowing and our team kids couldn’t thank wife and I enough it’s hard to find folks to volunteer there time like you and soccer, just need more of us to help the young people where ever we can.
