Mesa to Holbrook AZ Route
we have a one ton crew cab 8foot box pulling a 40 foot 5th wheel. were headed to holbrook az from mesa az and it appears there is two routes to holbrook excluding the interstate. one route out of mesa goes to payson is taking hwy 87 then hwy 260 to heber then hwy 277 to to hwy 77 which goes to holbrook. my second choice is hwy 60 to show low then pick up hwy 77 to holbrook. which of these two routes is best and has anyone taken, pulling a 5th wheel? thanks for your input!

Would do the route through Payson - should be a little shorter and faster. Either route is doable but 60 will take you through Salt River Canyon which is 25 MPH for a few miles at the bottom with several sharp turns. Some fairly steep grades to go up either way.

Have done both routes with the 5'er. Don't have real preference. Paysonis probably faster but the other is really scenic.

Agree with jimcol - If the Salt River Canyon was in any other state, it would be famous. But compared to Grand Canyon, sort of ho hum!
We live in NE mesa and always go to Payson and Heber to Holbrook. A pretty nice drive now since most of it is 4 lane except on the rim East of Payson where it is pretty level with stretches of 4 lane,
