Open Cabinet Door Syndrome revisited
On our old 3400RL, we had to lash (bungee cords) several cabinet doors together since they were prone to opening during our travels. In the 3750FL, we never had a cabinet door to open during transit. When we brought the new 3850FL home (seven hours on the road), we discovered that we were again subject to open cabinet door syndrome. One of the upper cabinet doors on the hutch was open, one dryer cabinet door was open and one washer cabinet door was open. I will try to tighten up the cabinet clasps to see if that provides some relief, but in the meantime, looks like we are back to lashing cabinet doors closed. Just have to decide if we want to use bungees again, or change over to velcro straps. Putting this out there as a reminder since some models can have disastrous results with slide interaction if cabinet doors come unknowingly open during transit. Fortunately on the 3850FL, there is no location where an open cabinet door would be impacted by a slide.

Bingo, Steve told me that the male and female parts of th latches have to be centered perfectly to work correctly. Hope this helps. Ours had open drawers on this trip. The fireplace door did not open properly either. I moved the bottom of the fire place out about 1/4 in problem solved.

Try those door lock things people use to 'baby-proof' cabinets, we use them and they are easy and nice to use.

The six inch ball bungee cords work for us! Tried the four inch but they were to tight and was afraid if one let go while taking them off they would hit the glass and I'd be replacing it so the 6" work great!

Used the short bungees on the 06 and use them on the 13. Some cabinet doors opened on both of them.

I use velcro straps. But have considered adding magnetic catches to all the doors as backup to the latches thinking that extra bit of holding power would be enough.

I guess we are in the minority. After 2 years we have not had a single door or drawer come open while transporting and we use nothing on ours. Our 3585SA is one of the unpopular RK models that was discontinued. Glad we got it when we did!

I had a accident with a door and had to replaced the hinge. I found a hinge that has a spring in it and it helps hold the door shut but you can open as normal and they only close on their own for the last couple of inches.

We use velcro just to be safe, but on the ones we had problems with I got magnetic catches from Lowes and they do the job. Lowes has two kinds and one is much stronger than the other. We used the stronger ones.

On our unit with two door/handles side by side I found some paneling that matched the woodwork and cut out an E shaped piece that fits over handles and prevents doors from opening. With the E pointing down the open portions fitting over the handles. This works great for us, besides the most important part is that it makes DW happy because it looks like it was original equipment.

Our cabinet doors were so tight we had a hard time opening them. So I took a pair if pliers and closed the diamond shaped plunger slightly and that fixed them and they do not open while traveling and is fairly easy to open.
Our last Monty the doors would come open. On that rig I used a medium sized screw driver to spread the diamond shaped plunger slightly and that was the fix to make them more snug stopped them from opening while traveling.
So it might be worth it to try experimenting with that adjustment a little to see if that helps. Joe

We used Velcro in the 3400. If the problem persist in the 3850 I will go with Joe's recommendation first. Then follow up with another remedy.

I have replaced most of the latches with the same ones we had in our HM and have had nothing come open. Southco # SC-4320 and SC-4323.

We use the velcro strips that are used in tidying up electronic cords. About $5.00 at Lowes for 25 in a pack. Can be doubled for longer length. Only had a single door open, but now we strap all closed and not a issue now.

We have had issues with our 3400 cabinets until my wife got the 4" velcro strips. They work really well - no fail.

I like JOLU's idea! Especially when used with Steve's idea. Just might be the perfect fix. Steve said that good alignment of the male and female parts of the latches can be accomished by moving latches to new location. That allows the spring rollers to apply equal pressure on both sides of the latch. That along the enlargement of diamond shaped end makes a lot of sense . Thanks, JOLU!

DH installed heavy duty magnetic catches to all doors prone to opening. We also use velcro straps. I drop a dowel down the center of the drawer handles even in the bedroom.

I agree that you do not want the cabinets/drawers "knuckle busting" tight- as Artemus Gordon and jlb27537 explained. Therefore the velcro straps.
