Buying dirt?
Mudchief (and all the ranchers and farmers) must be laughing about now. Buying dirt.
Well.. I saw the heirloom and fancy Tomatoes in the grocery store, I says to myself, Hershel, you ain't paying that much for 'Maters!
So, Sue and I cleared last year's vines and weeds from our little 15x15' garden, I goes to the greenhouse and bought $35.00 worth of 'Mater plants and compost. Big boy, Better boy, Beefsteak, Early girl Brandywine and Super sweet 100. I am dreaming of BLT's all the way home, nice juicy thin-skinned tasty Tomatoes, I will eat one like an apple I was mumbling to myself.
Sue met me and saw all the tomato plants and said Jim they won't fit in the garden, you got too many. But, she says, we can plant them in the big pots we have. Cool, I says. But we need dirt. I says we have about an acre here, we got dirt. Potting soil she says.
I left, going to Home Depot. I asked the kid working the where the dirt was. He said what kind of dirt? I says Tomato planting dirt.
He pointed out 3 end caps and a long stretch of shelving with different kinds of dirt. I am thinking the trip to the produce isle would have been the right thing to do about now.
They have $8.00 a bag dirt, $7.00 a bag dirt, big bags, small bags, dirt with fertilizer in it, dirt with peat moss in it, dirt for flowers, dirt for ?? I got to the end of the dirt isle, I saw .99 a bag dirt 40# each. I bought 5 bags for the pots, I saw Mushroom compost, so I got a bag of that.
I think I am up to about $50.00 now.
Free advice: get the fancy Tomatoes in the produce isle.
Don't buy dirt...

Ozz,
About the time your maters are ready to pick, everyone elses will be and they will be giving them away because they have to many.
Now figure out a way to keep them fresh until December and you will make a fortune like the grocery store. Fresh Maters all year long.

Hey OZZ try buying 65 triple axle truck loads of dirt! When we remodeled our S&B here in Omaha that is what it took to level out the front yard and fill the hole where the house used to sit! Talk about some expensive front yard!

When all those babies start producing, I can see it now from the neighborhood.

Hope you have a better summer than we did last year. With the drought and the heat, even with us watering daily all we got was nice looking plants. They never set fruit.

Weather forecast here in Wichita is freeze again tomorrow night ... at this rate, the tomato season will be over before we get anything to live past a freeze. My neighbor who always tries to plant early to get the first tomatoes on the block has had two plantings freeze on him this spring. He's devastated!

I checked at Safeway and they told me that they would have tomatoes all year. My garden problem is solved.

2 years ago when we traveled for a year we were always on the look-out for fresh garden tomatoes, often we stopped at roadside stands touting 'Home grown fresh tomatoes' or something like that. We only found the thick-skinned tasteless greenhouse tomatoes, these are designed by some lab-coated bean counter. Designed for maximum shelf-life and made to look purty and mimic home-grown tomatoes. Store-bought Tomatoes are tasteless, the greenhouses try and scam you by packaging the bright-red tomatoes with stems left on them. Hello... just because they have stems on them, they are not good 'mater's.
I will have some in reserve, under the big overhang we have in back of the house to save from a freeze in the pots I had to buy dirt for. I hope for a good crop, but you just never know.

Ozz, don't buy dirt again. Just come to the farm and I will load your truck with some good dirt from the feed lot.

You know, back 'In the day' we would do that. Now with the cost of fuel, a guy would spend $200 doin that.
I don't know where this price thing is going, where we will end up as a society. It is so depressing grocery shopping now, the small amount of product in a package.
Anyway, thanks for the offer Dennis, I know you mean it. You are a good fella.
Ozz
rving2us, thanks. I try and see the fun side of anything in life.

Loved your story Ozz, now on to the bedding plants. Keep us posted as I know the next one will be about the cost/process of constructing a your roadside produce stand!!!

Mudchief, around here they call it cow manure compost. And it sells for $2.15 for .75 sq ft bag.
Ozz, with all the rain we've had here so far, I'm gonna' maters all over the place, too. I put out 9 plants earlier this week.

When growing up our best Tommy-toes always came form the hog lot fence row. My favorite snack as a kid was a cold biscuit and a fresh tomatoe from our garden. Now we have those tasteless things from the produce department. There is pleasure in eating what you have grown yourself. I miss gardening. Hope you have a good crop year.
