I'm sure there's a question in there somewhere, I'm just trying to figure out what it is.

why were the head gaskets replaced? If your equipment is in good shape a trip out west should be pretty much event free. The 6.0 diesel is a good motor

Do you mean pulling after having had new head gaskets installed?
I pulled many times with my '07 6.0 F350 thru Colorado mountains with no problems, but I never had to have the head gaskets replaced.
I would think you would have no problems with it assuming the work was all done properly.

I think the question is regarding the fact he had to replace the head gaskets and is hoping for no problems.
Head gaskets should be a rarity for replacing. But if the head gaskets are replaced the truck should be good to go whether or not they were replaced if the work is done properly. There have been some reports and I get plenty of Lawyer invitations to join class action lawsuits to Ford about the 6.0 PSD motor problems including head gaskets but I haven't had any major problems so right now I think like racerjoe.
Even though I have the 6.0 PSD, I still try and take it easy, towing under 65, cruising at about 62, watching the turbo gauge, using cruise control only on flat highways and minimizing jack rabbit driving. I just don't want to have any problems and would do this with any vehicle. I've driven from San Diego to Washington state over to Montana and other trips to the Northeast and Southeast. No problems here. I've towed other trailers from where I live to parts of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Arizona and no issues so far.

The heads on the 6L are a problem area or should I say head bolts. The bolts were too small and allow the heads to lift slightly under high boost and cylinder pressure. It would have been nice if the bolts would have been replaced with a better grade after market bolt but I doubt they were. If this were my truck I would be looking at new head bolts. Go to one of the 6L diesel performance web sites and ask those guys and see what they say.

Only concern I would have is if the heads require retorque at certain milage.

Good one mail2us! Even though head gasket wasn't listed, I recall I got a lawyer letter with that and more on listed in it. Unfortunately (or fortunately) The only issue I've had is replacing batteries (not covered by anything), a light bulb ($3.00 fix and I provided the labor) and just now the A/C stopped working and I wouldn't consider this a 6.0PSD issue yet. The other expenses are all maintenance costs associated with me doing the maintenance and just buying the parts and supplies.
For luck, I still keep all my body parts crossed (fingers, arms, legs and eyes), except when driving.

We recieved a link to a site that a repair shop owner claims that the coolant tank cap is the culprit for the head gasket problem. If you test it, most auto parts shops have a tester, you'll find that it will not hold pressure. If it don't hold pressure then it will cause the coolant to boil. It's a five dollar part so I just replaced it.

Hey Guys:
I feel your pain about the 2005 Ford 6.0L. Been there, done that.
3 replacement EGR/oil coolers, head gaskets, replaced head bots,
new coolant tank and caps.Everything started just after the Ford
warrantee ran out. Ford knows about the problems but will do NOTHING
about it. All repairs were done at Ford shops. I guess I forgot that
if you keep doing the same things you will get the same results !
Went with BulletProofDiesel after talking with Andrew there. Got it in for repair in Mesa, AZ, last spring and have had no problems since. By the by I have over 160,000 miles on the truck. My new rig is a 2013 Montana 3800RE. GVWR 15980, 400 lb less than previous rig.
Installed Insight monitor to watch temperatures as the Ford guages
are Mickey Mouse and only give you indications too late.
The 6.0 L Diesel is a great engine and it is why I bought Ford F350 but with the lack of understanding from Ford my next truck is GMC.
