Calgon
I'm really paranoid about my black tank. Many of you have mentioned putting Calgon in your black tanks. Calgon what? I've looked for any kind of Calgon and haven't seen any anywhere. I use the TST in my tank but am not sure if that is all I should do. I want to keep my tanks as clean and free-flowing as possible. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I still consider myself a newbe even though I've had my 3400 for three years. I've learned a great deal from this forum for which I am very thankful.

Calgon is the brand name, it's a water softner. After dumping the black tank, we use one cap full and a gallon or two of water. Works fine, most Wal Marts have it in the laundry section.

We use a scoop of generic Boraxo and a scoop of the cheapest laundry powder after each dump- Powdered products are easier and safer to transport than liquids which make a mess when spilled [don't ask how we know]- This system has been in use by rvers for at least as long as we have been fulltiming [13 years and counting]- Coupled with use of the power flush, this may be why our tank sensors still work somewhat- JMHO- Don

At Wally World, but not at all of them. We've found it at some but not all.

They have at most grocery stores. Remember to use lot's and lot's of water when flushing.
By using a lot of water I drain and flush the tank every three days.

Publix grocery store here, but you have to look for it. Water softener, not fabric softener. I found it down by the specialty soaps and laundry additives. It is the liquid version.

We use the new pouches that have Calgon and a dish soap in the same pouch. You're supposed to toss one in the dishwasher per load instead of the soap and Calgon by itself. I just toss two in after I dump the tank.

Also, note, that it may not be sold in places where the natural water is soft to begin with, no call for it, why stock it on the shelves.
This may help you, shows photos and all that good stuff.
And, here is a neat map showing hard water areas in the USA.

Here is some information I found a while back on Black & Gray Holding Tanks. Interesting read if nothing else. I use the powder Calgon in our black tank.

Calgon water softener. Comes in liquid or granular form. I've used both. You can usually find it in grocery stores in the racks that have household cleaners or, even near the dish washing cleaners. I put a bunch in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket. Fill the bucket with water and then add a bunch of blue Dawn dish washing soap. Next, pour it down the toilet into the tank. I do this after we have used the unit over the weekend and have drained the tanks. I leave it set in there until we come back the following weekend. I have also done this when the tank is empty and we are getting ready to pull the unit down the road. But, I add about 10 gallons of water and a bag of ice cubes. When we get to our destination, the tank has been stirred real good and then, I dump. Seems to work good for me.

I've found that some of the generic water softeners also work well. I've found it at Dollar General and several other regular grocery stores! I just use about a cup of the powder but as I've said before I usually use Happy Camper which I think has a water softener in it as part of the ingredients!
