How would you like to do for a new occupation?

Hi
I have climbed a few working part time for S&S towers in Florida. Haven’t climbed in the last 20 years just got to old.
Most towers more than 1,000 ft have elevators but the last several hundred feet have to be climbed. Most of the time it is to replace lights or strobes.

Did you climb with ease or did it make you a little nervous?

That is a bit high. We went up our share of Micro wave towers while with the FAA to change strobe lights but the highest as I remember was @ 220 feet. They later got steeplejacks to do the job. I was never thrilled with the job and always my best to get out of it. We went up a small safety encloser in the center of the tower and attached to a safety belt/brake...but still...

Hello
Bill-N-Donna
Some people like myself and the fellows I worked with don’t have a problem with it. Some times we would get a new guy and it isn’t hard to tell they will be unsafe because of the stress some people have with heights.
I have worked on the towers owned by Gannet. Some of them 2,000 ft high. These are very large towers the intermediate platforms that are installed during construction for the units that don’t require then height of the FM or TV station antennas are large enough to drive a jeep around. Not turn the jeep around but drive it around the tower. The biggest tower I have worked on was in Miami. 2,000 ft high and I didn’t get paid for that one I did it for nothing in order to mount an Armature Radio antenna.
Richfaa
The smaller towers we worked on we climbed but not on the inside. Most of the work we did on the small towers was on antennas and you can’t do anything from inside the tower.
