It sounds like the sensor (laser) has some dirt or dust on it. You can try to clean it, but be careful not to misaligned it. I think they make cleaning disks, and you can ask in an electronics store.
As for replacement, just about any combo unit will work but the one thing you have to be aware of is the type of input/outputs on the back of the 6000. The newer technology electronic equipment may not have all that old "RCA" phono jack input/outputs and you then have a boat without a paddle. I'm in the position now that I have a new television but I cannot put the optical output into the home theater because there is not an optical input on the home theater. Also, the home theater (or 6000 in your case) has all wire terminal snaps, or screws for the audio speakers, and the newer technology has RCA Phono jacks or wireless.
