Danged squirrels did it again!
Chewed my wiring and vacuum hoses again. Pretty sure it was squirrels as we have a lot of them around here. Sometimes will be 3-4 in the front yard at the same time. Have occasionally had mice, but I keep rat/mice bait in the garage and they have not eaten any of it lately. They have either died, got smart, or moved on. Have never seen any rats or heard of any neighbors seeing any.
Unfortunately truck has to stay outside as it will not fit in the garage.
Happened about 5 yrs ago to my '04 F250. A number of things quit working. Took it to the dealer. He called me later to come look. There was a nest of sticks and twigs about a foot diameter under the hood next to the firewall on the passenger side. A wiring harness there had been completely chewed in half. $400+ for that one.
Last week, on my '07 F350 the dampers to divert the air from the heater vents to the AC vents to the defrost vents quit working. Air thru the defrost vents only. Took it in to the dealer. Yep. Wiring harness near the firewall on the passenger side and some vacuum hoses chewed. Vacuum pump had burned out as it had been running continuously. No nest this time though. Total bill would have been nearly $500 but service advisor got my ESP to pay for the pump (by forgetting to mention rodent damage). Still my part was nearly $200 for deductible, wiring, hoses, and labor.
On the '04, I sprayed some red fox urine (hunter's cover scent) under the wheel wells and some under the hood. Did that several times over the next few months and had no further problem. Don't really know if that did the trick or not. Many claim the scents don't work. But I have now sprayed this truck with it also. Will find out I guess. Have had the truck 3 yrs and this is the first time for it. Both trucks are/were driven almost every day. Don't know when they found time to build that much nest on the '04.
