Brake Failure
Just thought I'd pass this on to whomever might be interested. On the way west from Connecticut to Ohio on Thursday, we lost our trailer brakes. Have you ever white-knuckled it going through Pennsylvania and West Virginia mountains (8% grades, several) without trailer brakes? My wife got out the Trailer Life Directory and found an RV service in Hamilton, OH (Jeff Couch's RV Nation) and called them to set up an appointment. We couldn't get there until Saturday so they set up an appointment for us for today (Monday). On all four wheels, the back brake shoe was gone and all that was left was the metal. While the wheels were off, I noticed that the seals were pushed out. There was adequate grease, not too much, so I had them replace the seals and repack the bearings.
I mention all this because I'm an advocate for checking the brakes once each year when repacking the bearings, yet when they were checked last December, everything looked okay. The brakes lasted from April 2006 to now, a total of four years, six months. I had no indication that the brakes were going until suddenly they were gone!
Incidentally, Jeff Couch's RV Nation is a good place to go if you're in trouble near Hamilton, OH.

Wow Orv,
Good thing you had the Exhaust Brake, otherwise you may have been using the lost brake truck ramp.

Glad you're OK. Thanks for the recommendation for Jeff Couch's RV Nation. It's a good reminder for all of us to routinely inspect our rigs.

Orv, I'm glad nothing bad happened! I wonder why the back shoes all wore off like that? If they do more braking than the front shoes, they should be thicker, but I thought both shoes were supposed to work equally when braking.

Tom,
What they told me is that the back shoe contacts the drum first and then it forces the front shoe to contact the drum. Makes sense to me.
