Skyline Drive
We plan on going there early Oct on way to Williamsburg. Where to camp for a couple nights? Do I want to drag the 36ft f/w up there to experience the mountain camping, or stay below and just drive up to sight see? Recommendations please? This will be first time there.

I would research tunnel heights on the Skyline Drive first. I have travelled it in a car, towing a 22` TT and on motorcycle. While I love the area for camping, taking a 5er up their might be tight on the road. Country Waye is a nice campground off of 340 I think. Did not like KOA in Front Royal.

Ray - You can get onto Skyline Drive in Front Royal (Milepost 0) and travel south as far as Thornton Gap (Milepost 31) where you will have to get off. Just south of Thorton Gap is a tunnel that is supposedly 12'8". I say supposedly because it may be that high in the middle of the roadway but certainly not at the edge of the drive. I have not, an will not, try to take our 3400RL through there. Along the route near Milepost 22 is Matthews Arm Campground. We stay there a couple times a year and love it up there. During the week, sites are plentiful and large enough for our 3400RL, but not so on weekends. If in doubt, they do have some sites that you can reserve at www.recreation.gov.

When we traveled in the 3400RL we stay at:
North Fork Resort
301 North Fork Road
Front Royal, VA 22630-4676
(540) 636-2995.
Ask to get a back in at the river's edge. Bring tubes. You can wade across the river, which is about 100 yards wide, and shallow. It is a Passport America(PA) CG. Passport America rate is $20 a night and can be used for 2 weeks. If you are not a PA member, it is $44 for the year and you would get your money back in 2+ nights since the normal rate is $40 a night. I'll give you my PA number as a referral if you are not a member. It is only a couple miles from the entrance to Skyline Dr.

I recommend that you not take the fiver up there. Staying at North Fork is a good idea if you want to take a ride on the Skyline. I loved it on a motorcycle, and in the Corvette, but no way would I take my Monty up there.

Thanks for the replies. I now agree on staying at Ft Royal or Luray and just going up to sight see. Thanks, Ray
