Check valve replacement or repair; water heater
This is a slide-show showing repair or replacement of a check valve.
I had plastic trash clogging it, some from a plastic bag, some from the same hard rubber as the faucet spout attachment. I know it didn't come from there, but a washer?? or something.
Just let the water pressure release, drain some from the water heater, and you have little mess.

Did the same thing last summer, had the same described trash, finally figured out it was the rubber seat in the back flow valve. Rubber should not be that close to hot water. Anyway I removed the backflow preventer, have had no problems and better water flow.

What is the downside of removing the backflow preventer?
We've replaced ours in both this and the prior Montana when our hot water flow just stopped. Both times it was this check valve causing the problem.

Water would migrate back wards, it will temper the cold water, your heater will run more, and the water will not be as hot. They put it in for a reason, if it would be better out, they would leave it out.

When I winterize, I open the water heater bypass valve, drain the water heater, and fill the system with the RV antifreeze. Wouldn’t removing the valve allow the antifreeze to flow back into the water heater?

Ozz can the backflow devise be installed a bit farther from the heat of the water heater to prevent that from happening again.

It is a restriction, and any 'junk' in the system gets caught in there, no matter where it is inserted.

Our valve was removed 3 years ago- We can't winterize now so we just go south for the winter as most fulltimers do- Excuse my attempt at humor but I couldn't resist- JHMO- Don

There are different types, as soon as you let me know which one you have, I will let you know the price and availability. They are inexpensive.

It is the same as mine, as far as I can tell, I think it will be fine to use. Put 3 wraps of Teflon tape on each end, do not get the tape inside the opening.
You will do fine, I had to use a small pipe wrench with a cheater on it for leverage, they are in there tight.

Thanks again
