30 # vs 40 # propane tanks
Has anyone changed their 30# tanks for 40 # propane tanks? I am thinking about installing a LP generator in our 3485SA Montana. The 40# ones would add about 5 gallons more propane. Will they fit?

Since propane is about 4.2 lb/gal, you'd only get two to three more gallons in a 40# tank. Would it fit in the rig?

30# specs:
7.1 Gal
12.125 inches diameter
23.687 inches tall
25.4 pounds tare weight
40# specs:
9.4 gal
12.125 diameter
29.250 tall
33.6 pounds tare weight
As to fit, I don't know.

They wouldn't fit in mine without some hose changes. I personally don't recommend them simply because as I age the bottles get heavier! It's hard enough to put the 30# bottles in the truck, take them out, and put them in the rig! I don't know about you guys but I'd rather wrestle my 50-amp cable than with 40-lb propane bottles.

I doubt if I'll switch to the 40#ers even if they fit; but I sure would like the new "see through" tanks. Man it would be so much easier to know when to fill 'em up.

Thanks for the input. The 30# are a pain and for some reason they seem to have gotten heavier over the years.

I don't think I would want to deal with longer lines and the extra weight.

After looking at the mounting cabinet that the tank rest, on I do not think that a larger tank would be desined for the tank compartment or be able to safely handle the extra weight for long. I went and purchase another tank, and I carry it in the bed of the truck along with my 2.5 gal and 4.5 gal tanks.

'See through' tanks???? Haven't seen nor heard of those before.
On edit -- got me curios so I did a google search and found some -- no prices or sources -- just curious as to what they were. Interesting. Will be nice to see what the fire marshals finally approve -- the one article I read in detail indicated that manufacturers were working to get the US Fire code updated to allow them in more things. Would be nice to see just how much fuel you have left!!

Tare Weight
The empty cylinders of 20, 30 or 40 pounds capacity feature the same diameter. But the height varies a few inches. Therefore, the tare weights of these are 5-6 pounds distant from each other. Here is the list-
Tare Weight of 20 lbs propane tank: 16.6 pounds.
Tare Weight of 30 lbs propane tank: 23.5 pounds.
Tare Weight of 40 lbs propane tank: 29 pounds.
Propane Weight
Propane weight of 20 lbs propane tank: 19.8 pounds
Propane weight of 30 lbs propane tank: 30.8 pounds
Propane weight of 40 lbs propane tank: 41.36 pounds
Full Weight
Full weight of 20 lbs propane tank: 36.4 pounds
Full weight of 30 lbs propane tank: 54.5 pounds
Full weight of 40 lbs propane tank: 70.36 pounds

I thought about it……but bought two extra 30lb tanks. I don’t have a generator but the cold weather from last February it sure paid off having those extra tanks.

Have a look at Mopeka tank monitors.
I have had mine for just over 2 years. They work great.

What has happened to the "Manly Man", I'm a 73 year old Female and can still get my 40# tanks in and out. Granted they are heavy and I wouldn't want to do it day in and out, but can still manage it.

If humping a few less pounds matters there are composite tanks available at half the weight. Plus you can see the propane level.

Propane generators consume fuel much faster than their liquid fueled cousins. A 5500 Onan will suck that 40 pound propane cylinder empty in no time. Do some research to see if propane will work for the anticipated mission you have in mind.

Add another vote for the Mopeka tank sensors. I thought maybe they were a gimmick, but they really do work well. I usually only use the furnace for a 3 week hunting trip in November/December each year. I was concerned that I would need extra propane and had thought about going to the 40 lb tanks. They will fit in my rig, but I found that I only burned about 15% of one tank during that 3 week trip the first year. I use electric heat a lot and have wireless thermometers in the belly, basement and garage. Once I get the rig warmed up, the electric heaters keep it there with no problems, even and sub-zero temps for a few days. Never had a propane generator though. I've heard they really suck down the propane. If you're stationary, you might consider renting a 100 lb cylinder delivered. Price is reasonable in many places and some one else has to do the heavy lifting.

We have the 381TH and switched out our 30s for 40s.
They fit, just barely, without moving anything or needing different lines.
It definitely made a difference in how frequently we need to get them filled, and with having the generator i figured even if only a little, having the extra propane on board wouldnt hurt.
