Wi-Fi antenna feedback from vendor.
Got this Email:
Jim,
Thank you for your inquiry and interest in AIR802 products.
If you are in a RV and are trying to communicate with a network in a
known
building 1/2 to 1 mile away, then our yagi antenna would be an
appropriate
choice. These antennas operating under 2.4 GHz are what you are looking
for.
Yagis are semi-directional antennas, you point them towards the
building
that you are attempting to communicate with.
The distance is dependent on not just the antenna, but the power of the
transitting and receiving devices at either end. But generally, our
12dBi
gain yagi would probably fit your needs. We also offer 15dBi and 18dBi
gain
models. The higher the gain, the longer the antenna is.
We also sell the cable assembly to go between the antenna and the
computer
device that you are using.
Regards,
Mike Bryant

Ozz, in spite of a grimace at the description of a Yagi as semidirectional, that's an honest description of what's real. The Yagi is exceedingly simple (read Cheap)to make and is not such a precision device that it takes high technology to produce. I have one from Verizon that is nothing more than a piece of sheet metal that has been stamped in the proper shape with a piece of circuit board that the cable is attached to.
Shop around before you buy. I haven't been in the market for anything that I couldn't build myself for years, so I can't even be semidirectional to point you in the right direction of a vendor. Don't get too caught up with the gain (xx dBi or dBd) numbers, though; people lie. Compare the number of elements. More elements, more gain, etc.

Jim,
I would use a USB ethernet card attached to a cable so that you can put th antenna part (the ehternet part) in a window of your rig so that you can get better reception. I've seen your home, and I know a little about 'puters. Try it - you'll like it.

Thanks, guys! I am still scratching and clawing my way up the learning curve on this. Maybe by osmosis some of it will sink in.

Hi Ozz,
You might take a look at the Hawking product line. They make a variety of WiFi adapters and antennas. I am using a USB adapter with a separate removable antenna. You can then use the antenna connection to attach a range of other high gain antennas that they also sell. I got mine at CompUSA. (You can also use a USB extension cord to move the adapter around to find a good signal, I even have run mine out the window and put it on the rear ladder).
