Possible Shackle failure?
My brother and a friend ride motorcycles and are on a trip from California to Georgia.
On their way about 12 miles east of Santa Rosa, NM on I-40 they encountered a Montana on the side of the road. Both driver side wheels were missing from the rig! The rig was on its axles and they appeared to be broken!
This sure sounds as if the shackles failed! Wish we knew if it was one of our MOC members but my brother didn't stop. They already had help and the location made it difficult to stop.
Anyone out there know anything about this?
Sure hope everyone is OK.

Dennis; We just had new shackles put on our 2003 2955RL when we got back from our trip west this spring. We took it in because I noticed enlongated holes when I went under the unit. The service manager said the reason for the shackle failures was that they used a knurled bolt in them and if it gets a little loose, it will wallow the holes. I didn't see the bolts, but I'd be more inclined to think they were fluted as opposed to knurled. Incedently, there's a little over 40,000 miles on our unit. Just thought I'd throw that in.

It would be nice to know if it was a 99-01 Montana. If it was it probably did not have Service Advisory 00-8 performed on it. With out this frame upgrade it would be very possible to lose the wheels.
I have 35-40000 on mine and my shackles are still good.

Hi Tom,
I agree. It would be nice to know. This will probably be something that we will never know. I was hoping that by posting we might learn what happened. It was just a blind shot.

Wendell, there are two Dexter kits. One K71-449-00 for the 35" axle spacing and K71-359-00 for the 33" axle spacing. You can search the web using these numbers and they should come up. Prices vary but in the $150.00 range.

Hi Don,
Thanks for the specific info.... I had emailed Wendell with what I had but I did not have the exact specifications.
Wendell I assume you got the email I sent you. Hope you find what you need.
Thanks again Don.
