Slide Toppers
Afternoon on a wet SC weekend!
Not sure if this has been a topic, but I will ask anyway. We bought a 2015 (new) Montana 353 RL. Love the glamper. It does not have slide toppers (3 slides).
I have priced them with good material and the slate covers for storage protection. Just have to install them, but I can handle that. Price is reasonable (got enough from the Yamaha Venture Royale to cover the buy)
Just wondered peoples opinion on the need for these? We plan on full timing in a year and traveling as the legal tender permits! I am sure there are a lot of varied opinion, but just want to hear pros and cons.
Thanks
Steve

@ cdaniels - your comment is what I think will be the majority of comments. The general comment will be, if you have them great - if not OK too!
Cindy, How do you carry your scooters? We have 2 also and pondering how to transport? THX Steve

If you do a lot of camping under trees, especially at this time of the year, slide toppers save you from climbing on the roof to sweep the leaves off the slides.
Wish I could have gotten a picture of the rig we saw last week in Northern PA. They pulled in with a ton of leaves sticking out between the body and the slide and when they left a couple of days latter they had even more leaves stuck up in there. They would have made a good commercial for Slide Toppers.

Reply from another weekend wet from SC
Last fall I made note of fifth wheels in North Myrtle Beach Travel Park with toppers vs no toppers. The numbers were 50/50 about. With our three slides I agree with comment about having to clean leaves, etc before closing slides. I am getting to old to climb onto roof. I noticed most styles were the toppers which just roll up w/o covers. We are going to install toppers soon.

I think it has a lot to do with where you do most of your camping. In the plains, OK and TX, get quite a bit of wind. I wouldn't want them if we had regular wind. However, would be great when camping in trees and areas not as windy. I would like the protection. We don't have them and don't miss them.

There are another couple of factors to consider, one they shade the top of the slides and help to keep the slide tops cooler...and...they also shade that top outside seal. Top of slides dry when they retract into your rv as well. The sometimes noise you get used to. John

We replaced our Heritage RV, Tana's slide toppers last winter in Quartzsite. She was born June 2003.
Just the fact that we replaced may tell you something.
The wind rarely bothers us, once in Mission Texas when it blew for 48 hours, and they rattled the entire time, yes, that bothered me.
For us, the benefits far outweigh the wind rattles.

X2 with Carol. We came mostly where it's hot and the extra shade on the slideouts we wouldn't do without. We added ours after our first year so we know what a difference they made.

They were the first "option" we added to the list when we ordered 4 years ago. This is our second Montana and both have had them. Won't leave home without them!

That all depends on how the toppers are placed on the roof. We've had some that had the cover on the outside of the slide. Therefore, the slide had to be swept prior to retracting or all the stuff on the topper (leaves, pine cones, branches, etc) got rolled up in the slide cover.

Appreciate the comments. Pretty much my thoughts. We are in the south but lots of trees so I plan on installing them as soon as possible. Just something about listening to the acorns bounce off the top of the slides.
I have priced the toppers that when retracting should drop the leaves and branches off as the covers roll up. I also plan on getting the metal slat covers that enclose the covers when closed. That should help the life of the covers and protect from wind when driving. In a previous life, I made and painted a lot of the rollers and components for these slides toppers and awnings. Dometic was a major customer.
Again, appreciate the comments. This is really a great forum. Glad my better half found it! (that should be worth a few points!)
Safe travels!

We've had a lot of stuff (water, snow, leaves, pine needles, branches, etc.) land on top of our slides. The toppers prevented most of it from landing on top of the slide, thus minimizing the risk of pulling any of it inside when the slides are retracted.
