Bolt Torque Question
I can't find my note pad and was wondering if any of you guys remember the proper Torque for the U-Bolts on the suspension?
Thanks, Scott

I'm thinking that when we still had them I used to torque them to 70#.

The lip sheet shows 90 ft lbs, I have mine torqued to 70#, did that when I first got the new unit and they have not loosened up after 3 years.
Not sure of the grade of the u-bolts but that is what Lippert say to torque them to (90#)

You might consider that since the axles and springs are most likely Dexter a LIP sheet would not apply. The Dexter reps at the Fall Rally told us 70#.

45 to 70 ft/lbs per Dexter manual. Mine were 25 when I got it.

We can drag and flog this topic to its most exactness, but to sum it up ... whether Dexter or Lippert or ALCO axles ... in our case the hardware holding them on is more than likely Lippert supplied as it is their frame the axles are supporting. One source says up to 90 ... the other up to 70 ft lbs. Be assured either will work on a 9/16 u-bolt that is more than likely grade 5. We could further digest whether it needs to be a dry torque or lubricated torque ... whether there needs to be trailer weight on or off the axle when torqueing the u-bolts ... whether you should even reuse u-bolts that have run loose. Bottom line is get under you unit from time to time and make sure they're tight. If you don't have a torque wrench ... a good healthy pull with a standard combination wrench will be better than nothing.

For any new folks reading this. At a fall Rally several years ago the question was asked who had checked their U bolts and who found them way too loose. A lot of folks raised their hands, then the question was ask of who hasn't checked and most of the rest of the folks raised their hands. It's something to check for sure.
