"SMART TILES" BACKSPLASH AROUND COOKTOP
I did the "Smart Tile" backsplash around the cook top the other day. Below are before and after photos and here is a link to a "Slide Show" with a more step by step process of the project. Before I started the project, I tried to find the tiles at a couple of local "Home Depot" stores, but even though online it said the product was carried and in stock, it was not. So I went to the "Smart Tiles" website and ordered some samples. Once I made my choice, I shopped online and found that Home Depot had the best price with shipping so I ordered from them. I also ordered extra because I figured there might be a slight learning curve.
While waiting for the order to arrive, I reviewed the installation instructional video on the Smart Tiles and Home Depot websites a few times to get the procedure engrained in my brain. The rest was as easy as following the directions in the videos. I cleaned the area to be tiled with a solution of TSP to get it completely free of any grease and then began the project. I removed a couple of pieces of corner molding before starting and also removed the silicone sealant between the counter top and walls. I started by doing a dry run of the bottom row of tiles to make sure everything would layout nicely. One word of advice, make sure you clean up all of the old silicone well and that there are no little pieces left on the counter or the walls. I missed a piece at the very back corner and when I applied my first tile had a bubble at the bottom. So I had to remove the tile, clean up and start again. Although I could not re-use that tile, they are pretty forgiving and will allow for repositioning.
Because I was doing the work out at the rig, I just took a large cutting board from inside the house to use as my cutting surface. I used a 12" metal ruler and a 12" metal framing square for my cutting guides. I did not find it necessary to have a straight edge with a cork back as pointed out in one of the videos. Just hold the cutting guide firmly and you will be fine. To make my cuts I used a wallpapering knife (one of those knifes where you can break a piece of the blade off after each cut). When I got to the outlet, I used one of the peeled off adhesive back pieces of paper to make a template so I could check for fit before I cut up a tile. Once completed, I resealed with silicone and the project was done.
All in all I am pleased with the way the project turned out and I think it adds some character to the backsplash and in the case of our floor plan, has made the area much brighter than before. The tiles are very light weight easy to work with and look like glass tile. Total time was about 4 hours from start to finish and cost for 24 tiles was $173.00. Labor was free

Now, now, he has plenty to do AND he has signed up for golf! Even though he may not know it yet but I have him scheduled for a stove igniter installation. The warranty ran out on his last job so we just bought a new rig. He might be very busy!!

Ken,
Do you have the same range in you new rig as you did in your 3455?

My DW wants the Smart Tiles and we picked up some today. I noticed on the instructions it mentions they should not be installed less than 15" from a gas range. Where we want to put them is behind and beside the stove to brighten the space up and provide for easy cleanup for splatter.
I assume others have installed in a similar location. Any problems/concerns being that close to an open flame. Do the tiles get real hot when cooking something.?

Great job!!! It looks wonderful! I am wanting to do something in that area too. The smart tiles look like a great option! I also want to do the stove install that they mention. I was supposed to do it at the Q but too many things to do and such a short time to do it in. So it will have to wait for another day. Enjoy your mod!
