National Parks Closed
Of course this is the year we had reservations in the Smokey Mountains.
We were suppose to be in the North Fork NP this week but that is closed. Next week we are in the Smokey Mountains at a private campground but the Park is closed and probably patrolled to make sure you do not enter roads or trails. So much for our tax dollars.

I wanted to tour the Chicamauga battle field while I was in Chattanooga nut it was closed. I never had a job that I got paid if I didn't do what I was paid to do

We understand there are 47 maintenance personal and all the park law enforcement still at work in the Smokies and are focusing on making sure folks do not drive or bike on the Park roads. We are all experienced enough to have already made up our minds about this, but It begs the question, why?

Just got back from an Amtrak trip - We had just started the trip out of Chicago and the next day, the government shut down. We met a couple on their way to Flagstaff for their first visit of the Grand Canyon. Lucky for them they found that there's an open entrance through an Indian Reservation. Otherwise they'd be inclined to turn around, go home and it would be a complete waste of funds to plan and schedule that visit (their words). Now, I sit at my computer and wonder how they're doing. What we gotta do to see a big giant crack in the ground but I do highly recommend it and hope it's on everyone's bucket list. The place is AWESOME.
Is there an Indian Reservation around the Smokey National Park?

Yes, we know, but many low information folks don't. Going to Condo at Tree Tops up Roaring Fork tomorrow, will be riding our trikes over at Townsend and enjoying the private sector areas that must balance their budget to stay in business. We will take photos of "our" closed gates to remember the time. Have considered biking around the signs and metal pole gates., but that would be civil disobedience.

It was on the news that a park ranger in Washington State was told to make it as hard as possible on visitors.

Went by or COE lake today. Sad to see all those gates we painted being used to keep people out. No campers is very bad for the store also.

The IDIOTS in Washington are completely disgusting and always blame the 'other' guy for the problems. The solution? Let's volunteer them all for that one way trip for the Mars exploration!

If you r phone or cable co didn't provide what you were paying for you would get a refund. Think we'll see a refund for what we pay taxes for?

The Blueridge Parkway is open but none of the attractions like the Peaks of Otter or Mayberrys Mill are. They can't close parts of the Parkway because the road is part of the original road that can't be closed The peaks of Otter is on a section of route 43.

On our way south we usually take a cutoff from I 15 at Logandale and Overton UT and go thru Lake Mead National Rec Area and come out between Hoover Dam and Boulder City, Usually spend a night or 2 at Boulder Beach campground. Hopefully the road thru the park will be open, Saves going around thru Vegas and it is a beautiful drive.

I'll assume that was aimed at me. Doesn't matter if it's the truth or not - if it's political you risk having your post removed and getting a nice reminder of the rules.
And turn off your caps lock.

Chip, I really feel your pain on this one about the Blue Rdige. Just a few miles from our home is the entrance to the Blue Ridge Pkwy near Waynesville/Sylva NC. On the Blue Ridge Pkwy not far from that entrance is the Pisgah Inn...a motel and good restaurant...private. The employees, not Federal cannot go to work because of this shutdown.

Dennis and Judy
I don't get it the Peaks of Otter like the Pisgah Inn is not run by the federal government. The buildings are rented from the government. The Peaks of Otter is actually in route 43 which is a part of the Parkway. The federal government can't shut it down. Being closed is a great hardship on the employees as they aren't government employees and will not get back pay. Instead they get unemployment pay.
So why did they haft to close? I guess I'm just a poor dumb country boy.
