trading for new cell phone
After years of being restricted to only making and receiving calls, I added texting and a limited data package to our phones. Louise still uses hers' for making and receiving calls while I occasionally send text messages to the kids, when not available for talking. I also have found the convenience in using the internet when my laptop is not available. Case in point when I was in the hospital and cancelled our rally reservations.
Next week I get to upgrade my phone and am looking for advice on what you have and would recommend. I'm not looking for a lot of bells and whistles and definitely do not want a windows 8 phone. I would like to adhere to a KISS type phone as my frustration level seems to be rising.
Thanks for your help.

I've always felt that a cell phone is a cell phone is a cell phone...
Until I got one with all the bells and whistles. Both my wife and I have a iPhone 4S. Costs more but we like them.

I LOVED my iPhone4 -- it was without a doubt the most intuitive phone I have ever had (and being a tech junkie, I have had a bunch of them!) I switched to a Samsung Galaxy Note 2, and while I really like some things about it, I will most likely go back to an iPhone on my next upgrade (and I hear they're announcing a new one soon!)

I started with an iphone 4, the wife swapped up to a 4S and now I have a 5! However, she is now due an upgrade, so we wonder if we should wait for the next one or get her a 5....

It's funny that al of you recommend the I Phone as that is what I'm leaning towards. Specifically the 4S because, though it's not free, the price is within my range of acceptance. I did read one thing that the battery can only be changed by Apple which is not a big negative as long as it lasts 2 years.

Our Iphone 4's are both over 2 1/2 years old and both still going strong on the original batteries. When we do upgrade it will be with another iPhone.

iPhone here. Mine is a 3GS model and anytime they come up with the newer model, they send me updated "software" to make mine run currently.
I am thinking of trading if and when they decide to give me something for my 3GS that works perfectly.

I am with the iphone group.
Had a basic flip phone. All I needed was to make/receive calls. Didn't need a smart phone. That is until I got one. Got an iphone 4 because it was free (with updated service). DW has iphone 5.
Now I use it all the time for googling info I need, checking directions on one of many maps apps available, looking up RV parks, checking weather radar, checking sports scores, etc.

I moved up from flip to an iPhone4 (free at time of upgrade to 8GB Share Everything at Verizon) and DW has a Samsung Droid 4G. They seem to perform about the same, my battery will hold charge longer. With technology moving at such a fast pace I don't mine being 2 to 3 years behind the curve on phones. We also use a Mac and iPad so when DW upgrades it will probably be with Apple.

OK, I'll break the norm, I have the Samsung Galaxy S3 (S4 is out now). All smart phones go so much more today, they are almost as good as a computer.
Go somewhere and look and feel each model they sell. I think the S3 is a tad bigger than the IPhone, but they both do the same thing.

We both went with Straight Talk from Walmart. Barb did the swap first and went with a 4S and I, later, went with the 5.
Unlimited text, talk, internet.. Downside (?) you have to buy the phone for full price. Upside, you have no contract and the phone gets paid off in a year.. and the rest is gravy.. You can buy 1 month service for ~$49.. but, if you buy a year of service it works out to less than $40/month. and the payoff for the phone is faster.
They offer Verizon.. which we have.. as well as ATT and Sprint.
it's really a great deal if you don't mind paying up front. REally gets paid off rapidly.
Check it out.

The iphone 4s is available at our Walmart for $39. I was told that I needed to increase my data plan from 1gb to 4gb. Not knowing enough on my own, I declined the offer. Now that I'm doing more research I remember being told that if WIFI is available that the data plan would not be affected. I think the girl misunderstood and assumed my wife would be using data as well because we have the shared plan. I did find one posting that a 2gb data plan is the minimum required. I will be calling AT&T for verification. Does anyone out there know what minimum is required?

I have the Samsung Galaxy III and DW has iphone 4S. We both like our phones, but hers is limited to 3G service with Verizon and mine gets 4G. Mine is noticeably faster.

We have Samsung Galaxy S III's on Verizon and love them. They are both 4G (unless in an area without 4G coverage). I chose them over iPhone because you have access to the battery in the event you need to change it out and ability to install a micro SD card. We use them as our mobile hotspot for our computers as well....
