A RAT! got into the underbelly of the Monty
Have been going back and forth to the monty every week to put in supplies and I all was ok. I went back last week and when I went to turn on the battery in the front storage I noticed oil on the ground street side of the front stabeliser, I did shoot some WD 40 in there a while back I thought but not that much. but once I opened the compartment door I knew what was up. A RAT!!!!! was making a nest, it chewed the 2 one quart auto transmission fluid, then the Awsume had holes in it it also was empty. then I saw some fiberglass instalation in the nest, oh darn where did that come from? I looked around and found that this rat chewed a hole in the flexable heating duct he used that as a freeway to the underbellyand back. my heart fell to the ground........... I went inside the Monty expecting the worst and all was ok up stairs, no nest here or in the heater, so I turned on the water to wash my hands and no water was in the FW Tank we did hear water running and that was coming from outside from the back where the FW tank is OH no ! so I hooked it up and took it home for an inspection, after I took the one panel off I saw what that rat did. he or she chewed up my hydrolic lines, water lines, electrical wires. holy crap. this is not a simple fix so I called my insurance co, put in a clame. $4600.00......big ones. When I get it back i will put in wire guards in all the front leg openings moter for the legs, spring pad areas any place there is a opening. I left the other storage park because of human rats braking in. now its the real rat, which does far more damage that man. When I get time I'll take some pictures of the rat guards for a show n tell.
Thank God for insurance. with my 250.00 deductable it will be a easy fix for me, but not for my insurance co.

Don,
Really sorry to hear about that dirty rat. Like you said, thank goodness for insurance, but still quite a pain and inconvenience. Hope you're back together and on the road soon!

Sorry for your trouble. Keep us informed on your progress and since things are going well, would you mind telling us who you are insured with?

When watching a rat canvas a trailer across the road from us in Gulf Shores last summer i decided to start carrying a rodenticide bait station with us. I now place this under the camper against a tire if we will be parked longer than a weekend. I also use it in addition to the ones that the owner places at the storage building; just in case his is not tended properly. I have found a dead rat on the pavement at the storage facility. So far we have been lucky and not have one die in the camper.

What insurance company are you with? I was told they do not covere rodent damage? Raccoons got into my home and I had a heck of a fight with them, but they finally covered the damages. Raccoons are not rodents, lol.

fauch thanks for the info on the rat food stations i like that idea and will probably get two.
on Edit: I forgot to answer the other question about who I'm insured with, sorry. I have State Farm insurance, a seperate policy for the trailer, simular to our home owners insurance. I believe all insurance co work the same, it's how you have the policy set up for problems I think is the big thing.

I had mice chewing and clawing under the hood of my truck. Mr. Google said rodents don't like peppermint oil so I got some cosmetic cups with screw on lids, riddled them full of holes for ventilation and saturated cotton balls with peppermint oil. I have one under the hood in each vehicle and one on the counter in the monty. I'll find out after winter about how it worked in the monty but so far no more damage under the hoods of the vehicles.

When we are back in Kansas (pack rat country) we put a bait station between each set of tires and both vehicles have moth balls in panty hose tied under the hood. Haven't had a problem since we started that.

OK pepermint oil and moth balls. I'll try that. I have nothing to loose plus it will make for a nice smell in the under belly and engin compartment.
thanks for the tips.
Don

While in Canada we had a ground squirrel running in the space between above the ceiling and roof. Crawled up the back end cap between the walls and was hiding peanuts for the winter. Went on for days. I saw him doing it but couldn't stop him. Finally when I saw him run for more peanuts, I hooked up fast and took off. Got rid of the squirrel problem. A few nuts up there in the ceiling probably won't hurt. Now I sealed up all underneath entry points with steel wool and aluminum tape.

Well here is a up date on repairs they must have had a bunch of workers from mexico try and fix the water lines, they must have thought they were back home, they reversed the cold water lines with the hot so now the letter C on the knob must mean Calienti or hot. I was on the throne and when I flushed I noticed steam comming out of the toilet I thought I was having a cemical reaction in my Black tank but after cleaning the bowl I filled it with water an found out that was hot water, whoa what a mess. the dealer that wotked on the rig now has it back and will fix it right befor they get any more money. I think when I had break ins it was less expensive, a doo or window and some belongings missing. I would rather have that than a rodent.
