tire question...swapping.
we are negotiating on a new rig right now. I prefer the tires on my old rig (4 months old ). cannot swap rims....so, any issues with putting my tires ( 235/85R16 ) onto the new rig rims which currently have 235/80R16 ? the new rig is new, but the tires aren't my first choice and they've been baking in the florida sun for a while. I think the new rig tires were "triangles" ? thanks !

Bill, what's different that the rims can't be swapped? Most of there larger 5er all use the same 8 bolt 6 1/2" circle with 4.9" centers and zero offset, but then again there is the load rating and PSI they will handle that has to match the tires you use. We just upgraded our rig by going for the G614s to G114s on 17.5 wheels, quick and easy swap (except for the $$$$). Just wondering

When we ordered our 2012 3585SA our dealer put our almost new tires from the 2008 onto the new rims and we have had no problems.

The first number is the width of the tread in millimeters, the second number (the one in your case that's different) is the aspect ratio, the R is for radial tire and the last number is the height of the rim in inches. In your example the difference between the two tires is that the sidewall on one is 85% of 235mm (199.75mm roughly 7.9inches) and the sidewall on the other is 80% of 235mm (188mm roughly 7.4inches). So in this case it shouldn't be a problem since you only need a half an inch more clearance for the larger tire.

From prior posts in this forum, both these size tires are often interchanged and don't have clearance issues. I guess your biggest issue is who pays and swaps out the tires, but technically speaking, no issues. Hopefully you are working with a dealer (and service manager) who understand your needs and is willing to work with you. Otherwise, the worst is to figure out a way to swap them out yourself.
Hmmm, DQDick, I thought the smaller the number the wider the tire, but this is affected by the height of the tire, too. I'm too lazy to look up the actual numbers, but since these tire sizes have been interchanged successfully, the easy answer for the OP is that both sizes fit. If the bolt patterns fit, then swapping the tires should be no big deal. If one wants to swap tires to different wheels, then there might be some other measurements to ensure the tire fits the rim.
Again, I hope your dealer is okay to work with getting you the tires you want on either set of wheels.

Are the tires on the new rig ST style? Are the tires on your rig LT style? If so, looks to me like a win-win for you- Good luck in your endeavors- JMHO- Don

cool, thanks for the replies. the rims on the new rig are much nicer and the swap will not be at my cost. the dealer is really negotiating with us. *If* we can finalize this deal, it'll be in the next day or so and we'll pick it up in about 2 weeks. Bad news is, it's an s.o.b....

Be sure to have them balance the tires. Worth doing while you're negotiating.

After getting a blowout on one of my Marabombs outside of San Antonio, I bought a complete set of Michelin tires. They are a little bit taller and rub on the plastic center piece between the tires on one side.

Absolutely! Balancing the tires "in my thinking" is required. I believe it DOES make a difference in the ride and the wear. Good luck with your new unit!!
