Brake Assembly Replacement?
Has anyone replaced the brakes on their Montana? It appears that replacing the entire brake assembly for approximately $50 per wheel is a decent bargain. I was looking on trailerpartsdepot.com and they have the 12" left and right assemblies. It has a 5-bolt attachment and comes with the shoes, magnet, springs, and adjuster. What do you think?

Look up the same brake on dexter's site and you will be pleased with the $50 price.

Yes replacing the entire assembly is the way to go. I would price the never adjust brakes while I was at it.

Art I changed mine in feb of 2010 to self ajust. As Greg said ck on them I payed about 50$ per wheel for them but I got them from a dealer locally not from dexter. its an easy job because you change the whole back plate. BTW they are alot better brakes I love them.

Replacing the entire brake assembly, backing plate and all is the easiest replacement wise and seemingly the cheapest. Be aware that there are 2 - 3 different magnets available for 12" brakes (white wire, black wire)... they are matched up to whether you have 5200# axles, 6000# axles, or 7000# axles. This all said, you'll get $50 worth of braking power and longevity for a $50 Dexter Style brake assembly that you mentioned ... you'll get $60.00 worth of braking and longevity from a $60 Dexter brake assembly found on another web site. What I'm pointing to here, for a few more bucks it's just like automotive brakes. You can buy the one year brakes cheap and have brake dust all over your wheels with a short service life or you can buy the better grade and not have brake dust all over with a longer service life. Shop around and read what you're actually getting in the deal.

How can I check to see what exact brakes I need for my Montana? Is there a stamp on the exist drum? I know that it is 12" brakes by that is all I know. Where can I get the self-adjusting brakes, as well? I appreciate the input.

Dexter was offering a great price for the never adjust brake assembly at the fall rally a couple of years ago. We got them and they do make a difference.

Art ... your axles should have a tag on them identifying what capacity they are ... order the 12" brakes to match your axle capacity. The difference is a litle more aggressive brake shoe compound and a slightly stronger magnet depending on application. The parts desk should be able to help you with the correct assembly.

I purchased the self-adjusting brakes at the Fall Rally last year for one great price. I was told by the Dexter representative they were for the 7000# axles but would fit my 5200# axles withe the 8 bolt pattern and they did. I had them installed before I left Goshen for home. WOW!!! What a difference.

What am I misunderstanding here. Dexter's web site shows a manual adjust 12" brake assembly for $300 each.

Wrong size. You need 12 inch by 2 inch.

If I am reading it right on trailerpartsdepot.com the 12 X 2 inch brakes are marked down from $56.99 to $42.74.. At that price it isn't worth the hassle for me to just change shoes. I hate brake shoes, they don't like me. I can rebuild motors but have always had an issue with brake springs....lol lol

Where can I find the axle weight (5000, 6000, 7000) limits if the tags on the axles have no embossed weight? Is it embossed on the drum?

Art,
The tag on the axle should provide something like, D50, D60, or D70. That is the axle rating according to Dexter.

the tags have absolutely NOTHING on it. If there is another part that has become missing over the past 9 years, it happened to BOTH axle tags!

If no tag or info on it ... there will be a stamped number somewhere along the axle tube usually off to one end. It will have as mentioned something like D-60 / D-70. All the Dexter 12" brake assemblies will bolt on and work, but like I said earlier, the brake compound is more aggressive and the magnet's strength will be greater on the 7000# assembly. As far as price ... the website originally mentioned in this post advertised in the fine print "Dexter type" assemblies while a site like ETrailer advertises "Dexter" assemblies along with the Dexter logo. As with any other OEM manufacturer ... you will pay a handsome price direct from the OEM, but you can buy the same thing from one of their vendors for a fraction of the cost. That's how business works in the US of A. If the OEM sold the product for the same price as it's vendors, the OEM would be in direct competition with the people trying to move their product ... not good business savvy.
Sorry I made this topic so hard ... I was just trying to point out the differences depending on axle capacity. I'd imagine going by the age of your trailer that you have 6000# axles. Find a site that sells Dexter or RedLine brake assys ... either is a good brand

If Art has a 2003 there is a good chance he has Al-Ko Kober axles. Montana switched to Dexter in mid 2004 and I don't know if they have any ID stamped on them like Dexter

Good point Charlie ... come to think of it ... my 2000 2850RK had Al Ko axles.
