New Mattress
We are getting near the end of our second season in our Montana and the stock king mattress is not holding up very well. In addition to plans for replacing it, we are considering cutting the frame down from king to queen to give us more room to move around the bed. Has anyone done this and been sorry they did...or anyone done this and been happy with your decision????

Michael,
Our dealer for years has ordered all their Montana's with the queen beds. When we bought our 08 two years ago, I asked the dealer why? They said: Diffidently more room to get into the bed & when you make the bed, you don't have to open the closet for more room.. I see no problem in downsizing. It's been done. Somebody will post something soon.
Yes, we replaced the stock mattress right away with a queen Serta.

When we took delivery of our 3455 it had the stock king in it. Our previous 3400 had a high end Queen Simmons pillow top in it that we insisted be swapped over to the new 3455. We just cut a strip of the plywood off each side and have never regretted that decision. For us we just don't need a king, don't have one in the stick either, we enjoy the extra space over the bigger mattress.

We made the king to queen switch and love the extra floor space. Already used to queen anyway.

We did the same adding a sleep number from CW. Just ripped the platform with a skill saw. The extra room is great and makes a big difference. Glad we did it.

Michael,
We bought our Monty at the RV show Hershey PA last year when we were camping in the area. Our SOB had our queen memory foam mattress from Costco and we didn't want to give it up. So we traded mattresses when we bought the camper. Back at the campground, I borrowed a jig saw from maintenance and cut 4 inches off each side. The queen size makes a huge difference when walking around the bed.

Looks like a queen replacement mattress is in our Montana's future! Thanks for your responses.

We ditched the king in our Big Sky when we hit the road full time last August, best thing we ever did.....king mattress was not very good we used weekends for several months and it was not the least bit comfortable. And especially like the extra space.......enjoy your choice.

We have the King and the tight fit doesn't bother us, however, if we were gonna shrink it down to a queen (1 ft less in width), how do you think the struts would work if the closet side of the bed's platform were cut way back and the other side not as much, so that the new Queen bed is offset, as opposed to equal cuts on either side. The closet side is where we'd like more room and the other side isn't so bad at all.
Does anyone think this would impact the structural usage and affect the struts? We do use the underbed storage and don't want to stress anything unknowingly.

My wife and I replace the stock mattress after two outings with a Comfortaire as we have in our house. We stayed with a king size, just did a mod on the platform. worked out fine.

There are those that like the space to chase each other AROUND the bed and then there are those that like the space to chase each other in the bed. Tough call huh!!!!!!!!!

We had a King in our 3400 when we first got it. We have a foam queen that we kept. I made 2 simple cuts on the platform it lays on and it was done. It wouldn’t be difficult to take it up and redo it into a King if we wanted to but we like the Queen size better for reasons already mentioned. You would probably only need to make the cuts on part of the platform not the whole thing. Ours went from the feet of the bed to about where the man’s closet is located. From there to the outside of the slide out it was already cut down to Queen size anyway.
