Route 17 in Colorado
We're looking at a trip to CO and AZ in the near future. One of the attractions we would like to see is the Cumbres & Toltec Narrow Gauge Railroad based in Chama, NM. We have heard that getting there from the east is a difficult drive (with a 34' fiver) over a very mountainous two lane road, Route 17, in CO coming from Alamosa, CO. If we travel north from Santa Fe we would use US 84. Can anyone advise, are these roads that difficult with a fifth wheel trailer? I do NOT have an exhaust brake and do not plan to invest in one just for one trip.
Thanks for any advice,
Kevin

If you are in Santa Fe that would be the way to go. If you are coming from the North then I would run Route 17. JMHO

If you are going to take the train from Antonito, then go N on I25 from Santa Fe and West on hwy US160 to Alamosa. From there take hwy US285 S to Antonito. There is a pretty decent CG in Mogote (719/376-5774).
If you want to take the train from Chama, contact the Cumbres-Toltec RR andget directions.
The burned bridge has been repaired and now the trip will go all the way to Chama. From there the return is by bus.

I appreciate the feedback.
ARJ, I didn't realize I could get the train at Antonito to Chama. I thought I had to go to Chama. If we ride the reverse route then I don't have to drive Rt 17 at all. GREAT IDEA.....thank you.

Here are some pics for you. Cumbres Toltec
We took the train from Antonito to Chama.
We booked seats in the Parlor Car. Great train ride with a meal.

Great photos Jolu, thank you. My wife and I just spent several hours plotting out our route and we believe taking the train from Antonito to Chama is the best idea for us. I have wanted to ride this line for 20+ years and this is my chance. I hope to get plenty of my own photos.
Thanks again,
Kevin

Hwy 17 isn't all that bad-a little twisty but it is a beautiful drive!
