I am told the Firestone is a great choice but I am putting on BF Goodrich Commercial TA's 235/85 16. Do a search on google for BFG Commercial TA on RVs. It will take you to pages of posts on RV.Net, MOC and many other places. They get rave reviews and I can't wait to get my Mission time bombs off this Friday!

Got my BFG Commercial TAs from tirerack.com
Only one trip of about 1,500 miles so far, so far so good...size is 235/85 16 so just slightly taller than stock. Great tire for the money and they do get rave reviews as well.

We put the BF Goodrich Commercial T/A's on the prior Montana and were very happy with them. On this one we have the Goodyear G614RST but they're very pricey and we got them because of weight. In your situation I'd go with the BFG's. I've not had good wear from Firestone tires but have not tried them on a trailer. I'm sure there are other good choices out there but I'd not go with the Goodyear's simply because they're very expensive and you don't do many miles and your Mountaineer likely doesn't need that extra weight capacity. Good luck in your choice.

Just put Michelin XPS RIBS on my 2955RL (235/85R16 Load range E). About $300 a piece. Very pleased so far.

Question for maphillips... what is the numerical load ratings for your Michelins (on the sidewall)? I don't rely on the Load Range E, because these can vary from brand to model to type, so my experience is one tire's load range E won't be another tire's load range E.
Thanks...

BF Goodrich Commercial TA's for us and we're very happy with them. They are the same tires that I run on the truck.

Gregg, Sometime back LonnieB (MOC tire guru) posted a good tire list that may still be current and not necessarily in priority order:
Michelin XPS Rib
Bridgestone Duravis R250
Bridgestone Duravis R500
Uniroyal Laredo HD/H
BFG Commercial T/A
Firestone Transforce HT
I believe these are all LT tires and not ST's that was OEM.
The Goodyear G614, a G rated is the premium tire and many MOC'er highly recommend this tire while the most pricey. Recommend you contact LonnieB with your specifi rig specs via PM or email. He's great for seeking professional help...the best in my opiniion. Good Luck.

I highly recommend the G614 but not if the extra weight capacity is not needed and a less expensive tire will meet the need and has the rating. Lonnie is an expert and also is very honest in his assessments. He helped me when I was buying tires and I trust his recommendations. Just keep in mind he's talking here about tires that seem to hold up well and are a good value but he also would not recommend any of those tires if you're loading them above the ratings. So just doublecheck the ratings against your load.

I just ordered 5 BFG Commerical T/As from Costco - tire, balance & mount - $166 each.
Tirerack.com was cheaper for just the tire & shipping, but then you have to balance & mount.
It was almost a wash.
I like the idea of being able to go to any Costco for service - if necessary.
A special thanks to Lonnie for all of his valuable info to the MOCers.

Hey Lonnie I was thinking about Firestone Transforce HT are they good? Also what size would you reccomend? A local dealer has a good price on them and I have Tranforce AT on my tv.

The Firestone Transforce H/T is a very good tire. In my opinion, it's as good as the BF Goodrich Commercial T/A. I have sold and installed both on trailers and haven't seen any problems with either one. I just like the Firestone better.
As to size, the LT245/75R16 is the same diameter as your current size, but about 1/2 inch wider. The LT235/85R16 is the same width as your current size, but about 1.7 inches greater in diameter. The LT245/75R16 load range E, and the LT235/85R16 load range E are both rated for 3042 pounds at 80 psi. The LT235/85R16 is the most common replacement size for the ST235/80R16.
I don't recommend exceeding the load and speed ratings of any tire, in any application. Doing so could lead to catastrophic failure of the tire, causing damage to life and property. It also voids any warranty the tire has when purchased.

Lonnie, are you aware of any difference in wear (mileage) between the Firestone and the BFG tires? That would be a factor in the purchase decision, I would think. If they're similar, then that's a wash. Just wondering. Thanks.

Good question Steve.
Both tires are rated for 50000 miles, are of similar construction, and within a couple of dollars in price. On a trailer, they will probably expire of old age long before the tread wears out, unless the trailer is in constant use.

I am waiting for pricing, with a trade of my china bombs, Hercules E rated @ 3520lbs @ 80 psi. These are made in USA. Any comments on these tires.
