For you Ford guys....
I have my eye on a brand new 2008 F450 cab and chassis crew cab here in AP at a good price. Seems I've been told the dually and cab & chassis trucks have different width rear axles. Is this the case? I would love to buy the truck and pick up a dually bed for it.

I have also heard that about the axles. The wheelbase of a cab & chassis truck is also longer, either 4 or 6" longer, not sure which one. I measured my F-350 the it is 56" from the cab to center of rear wheels and 98" outside to outside of the rear wheels. Maybe this will give you something to compare the F450 to.

You can't just put a bed on a cab and chassis setup without modifications. The F450 uses a pickup truck frame the cab and chassis use a straight rear rails unlike the pickup rails that have a rise for the rear wheel wells. Now if want a custom tow body the cab and chassis is the way to go.

The narrow rear end is to accommodate commercial truck bodies and service beds. It is handy to have a "Western Hauler Bed" for it and goes well with RV hauling. The slimmer profile helps in tight spots and there is no noticeable loss in handling.

we too were just looking at a F550 with the western hauler bed, but it has a gooseneck ball. The channel is cut down between the bedrails and we'd like to but the truck, but don't want to be back to having one truck for the gooseneck, and one for the fifth wheel. Due to the narrow channel is there a different type of fifth wheel set up or are the western hauler beds either or?

Well, I went with Chevy again. My son's in-laws just spent almost 6 grand on their Ford 6.0 PowerStroke on the EGR cooler and head gaskets (cab off). Don't want to start a war, but I'll stay with something that takes a more conventional approach for repairs. I've seen a Duramax replaced with just the hood removed.

We saw the 2011 Ford at the Tampa RV show. None of us with 08 to 10 Trucks could see the difference in the truck . The Ford guy there did not know much about the truck. he said the new Diesel was 160lbs lighter and the truck was @ 600lbs lighter but could not tell us where the additional weight was lost. He did not know what the gear ratio's were on the new 6 speed xmittion. Not enough known about the truck...

Even I have read enough about the new diesel to know that the reason the engine is lighter is that they went to improved composite materials for the engine and these are much lighter than the metals in previous motors. I anticipate these materials will be the way to go for future engines.
Some time back, someone posted some pretty detailed articles on the new Ford 6.7 motor. It sounds very promising, but the real concern is that this is the fourth diesel offering Ford has come up with within 10 years. But the specs read that they improved many things especially the efficiency, so that the motor is larger, stronger, lighter and provides better fuel mileage because of it. How do you beat that? That sure makes me feel good as a buyer of their older, heavier, okay-mileage 6.0L motor that has been doing okay for me so far.
I have read that the F-550, F-650 use a Cummings offering for their MDTs. They're all just one big happy family, aren't they?

SlickWillie, I believe you went the right route. I should have listened to the advice of a few members here and never bought the Ford back in September. I am planning to offload this thing as soon as I find a Silverado set up the way I want it.

From what I have seen, GM is stopping production on the Duramax trucks until April. Dealers don't seem to know what is going on. (I actually saw the article from GM to the dealer) I found the truck I bought on the lot at a dealer in Houston. The dealer I intended to purchase from did not have a Duramax in stock.

It looks as if the 2011 Ford will have several changes to reduce the weight. Some place I read a detailed account of the changes but of course when you have this thing called C.R.S, I believe they also will be going back to a 17" tire from the 19" on the F-450. The biggest reason is the fuel mileage numbers in the past, they have to reduce the weight.
Dave sorry for your disappoint. But GM will be building the Duramax again in April so there will be 3500HD's at the dealerships in June July I believe, I believe its the emisions crap they are having to deal with. Remember you can always find you a MDT and never have to worry about weight. I'm hoping it doesn't rain tomorrow, because its the day "Montana" and I go riding in the Freightliner . GBY...

I am still looking at the Sportchassis...funny how I have received a few "told ya so" emails from friends who have them. Guess I'll chalk this one up to another lesson learned. Oh shoot...looks like I'm making this thread into a Sportchassis thread now...

Hmmm, I had asked a question about a particular Ford. I felt I should let posters know that I was no longer interested in that info. Sorry if I offended anyone by hijacking my thread. In fact, I don't recall asking for any info on 2011 Fords, merely the 2008 I was looking at. So, I suppose I wasn't the only one that was off subject.
