TBC Fault
I have the dreaded TBC Fault indicator on my 2005 F250. Before I go to the dealer, any suggestions? I know it is Trailer Brake Controller, but is there anything to look at before I consider it a major failure of the unit? I can pull the trailer and control the brakes manually, there is no automatic function. The wiring seems to be OK.

Rick:
Sounds like your situation is different from mine--I couldn't even brake the trailer manually. But can you let us know just which error code is showing up on the message screen on your truck and whether the problem is intermittent or there all the time now?

It simply says TBC Fault. It is on constantly but when I hook up any trailer it recognizes and looks normal until you try to stop. I realized right away the trailer brakes were not working, but I could manually set the brakes.
I guess it is off to the dealer. I will post the outcome.

Truckdoc,
Is the problem only when you are towing? More than likely it's in the wireing. I've had the same problem three times in my 06 F250. Once it was in the add on female plug, in the pickup bed. Another time it was a loose wire under the trailer. The last time I couldn't find it myself and took the rig to our local dealer. They found two bad magnets in the trailer wheels.
Good Luck,
Jerry

I've heard of that fault message when there is a short in the wiring inside the hub. Usually that's because of wiring insulation rubbed off by movement within the hub. But I would think the other brakes would work in that case. Yours sounds more like a problem prior to the brakes. Maybe a short in another location?

Points to the problem being in the truck.

So...actually if manual actuator works then output system is ok. This one sounds like as you said "in the truck" and must be with the brake detection and/or gain control. Would require a schematic to do debug do you have that?

Well the TBC is fixed and we are ready to go to Fredericksburg Texas for Oktoberfest. As it turned out the Brake Pressure Tranducer turned out to be the problem. PN# 2L1Z-2B674-AA

Nice...brains of the electric brake system, reads hydraulic pressure so an appropriate voltage can be sent to the trailer brake magnets. Looks to be a $90.00 part.

I am just glad it was not the main module. I think for future reference, if the module reads the presence of the trailer and can be manually controlled, the module is likely to be working. If it wont modulate the braking, the transducer likely is at fault. I wonder what it would read on the display for a wiring problem? Would everything look normal and just not read the hookup of the trailer? I keep the truck long enough, I guess I will find out.
On that note while I was at the dealer a sales lady come out and asked if I wanted to trade my truck in on a new one. I said I was not really interested, her reply was you do not know what I am willing to offer. Out of curiosity I asked if I could trade in my truck and have the same payments I have now, she asked what my payments are and I said none, I have it paid off. She replied better yet, I could trade my truck for a new truck free and clear if I would take a gas engine....???? Apparently the demand for pre 07 Diesel engine trucks avoiding the new EPA regulations and Regeneration systems is pretty high.

We closed the place down last night. Getting ready to test the TBC some more, do not knot if we are going all the way home today but heading that way till we see something to get us to stop.
