New search page
I'm trying to improve search performance on this forum. Could everyone test this new search page for me and report any problems here - http://montanaadministrator.forumco.com/search.asp
The idea is to try to break the search page.

OK, I tried 2 simple searches
Dog on Leash
Calgon
had hits on both.
and, HOLY MOLY this thing was faster than greased lightening.
I did not examine the results, but, I know that several of the hits were GOOD hits, as I remember the threads.
DANG, that was SWEET!!!

I searched for water pump and got 44 hits
I then clicked Archived Posts and got zero hits.
Yes the search is faster.
Thanks for your effort.

Not only is it fast, it allows you to use more than one parameter, like a name, last 2 days and word (wire). and it comes back with the answer that only matches all of those. Great job.

Hmmmmm... big problem with the archived topics which could have been the cause of very slow searches in the past.

It does have drawbacks. Newest topics don't get included in the search until the search index is repopulated. I'm going to repopulate every hour to see how that works out.

regarding the archived posts, the search works w/o the search for: but with search by member. put anything into the Search for box and archive and you get back 0, use just a members name and archive and the results looks correct.

Appears to work well with the exception of archives.

VERY fast. This was one of the major drawbacks to using this function for me - hit the button and go get a cup of coffee.... Now if we can just get the minor bugs worked out, it will be a GREAT update to the forum.

There is a problem with the archives database table which is preventing me from creating indexes for the search to use. At the moment there is nothing in the archives index so no results can be returned. I'll let you know when its fixed.

Because I have to delete a lot of data from the archives I'm going to do it on backups of this forum first to make sure that it goes as planned. There may be a little downtime later on if needed in order to complete the job. A message will appear here if that is the case.
What do you all think about topics/replies/edits not appearing in a search until they are indexed every hour* ? i.e. it could take a topic one hour (maximum) to appear in a search? Is it an acceptable trade-off for the speed gains ?
* Disclaimer: I have the indexing set at one hour currently but it may have to be set to a greater period if there are other side effects (i.e. resource usage, disk space requirements, etc.)
I intend to leave the old search as a backup. Now is the time to make your thoughts known if you have any.

I find the search is more for posts that are hidden back behind the top viewing page, not a google.
I read most posts and am current with the posts of the last day.
The new search is a lot faster and better at finding things.
For me the search is to find that post that was here a day, week or month ago that I now need to research.
Thanks for your effort and ability to make it better

ForumCo I think it would be completely acceptable! The speed gains far out weigh such a slight delay.

Ditto what HamRad says, and H. John Kohl
We can stand a 1 hour delay, heck, most of us could probably live with something more like even 8 hours???????
If it is really a current thread it will show in Active Topics, even if you have to open that up to 12 hours, or Yesterday, or 2 days ago.
Like H. John Kohl says, it is the older stuff that we are usually searching for.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes it seems to be fixed and very fast. I searched on landing and got 586 hits then did landing legs and got 104 with the ARCHIVES.
Thank you very much for improving this feature. When we are trouble shooting repairs this working feature can really help.
Cheers,
