I think that this is a smaller version of the current engine, and for use in their work vans. Does anybody else have any additional info on this?

Jim, from what I got out of last nights news, they are doing both. The big diesel will have all the emissions as an auto does, but will retain the hp and torque. That will take a lot of engineering.
Then, develop and build a smaller diesel for use in suvs, 1500 pick ups and maybe some of their cars.

And the rest of the story (which they omitted and pertains to Dodge and Ford also)...after starting in Jan 2010, it will be completed in Jan 2013, tested until Jan 2015, placed into production in Jan 2017, have 15 recalls by Jan 2019, have the bugs worked out and a good engine up and running by Jan 2021.

Also I think GM has severed their relationship with Izusu for diesel development and production. I hope they learned something, GM diesels prior to the collboration with izusu were horrible.

Another round of emmission standards come into effect in 2010 so there will be a new round of all the diesels.

Supposedly, Cummins 6.7 is already 2010 compliant.
However, Love my DMax

I hope that are as strong as the current Duramax 6.6L. Maybe they won't make any changes to them, we can only hope.
