GM intermediate steering shaft rattle
Well, the thing was driving me bananas with that rattle from the excessive clearance it had developed. At low speeds it felt like the whole front end was loose. I had talked to my dealer back in East TX about replacing it with the updated shaft, but never go a "round tuit". So, I took it to the GM dealer here in Aransas Pass yesterday morning. Small dealer, big personality. They had me bring it back in at 1:30 PM, and had the new shaft in in less than an hour. When I take the survey back, I will get a free vehicle detail. BTW, it drives like a new one now. I hope it lasts, but if it doesn't, I'm gonna enjoy it while I can.

On my 03 I had it replaced and on the 05 they lubed it. In both cases it worked without any further incidents.
On the 03 both the dealer and Chevy wanted to hassle me as the truck was no longer under warranty. I explained to Chevy that I knew this was an on going problem that actually started around the 1999 model year. After a rather lengthy "discussion", I explained that they have known for years that these shafts are a problem and yet they have done nothing over the years to correct the problem at time of manufacture. Chevy finally caved in and did the replacement Free of any charges. If your dealer insists on charging get ahold of that dealer's GM Customer Service rep and explain you are fully aware of this ongoing problem and you ain't payin' nuttin.

Mine is a 2002 with 159,000 miles. Living with it for now. It is annoying, though. I will probably not do anything now, as I am closing in on a trade in.

Thanks for the heads up. Ours has rattled for two years. Contacted GM and they took it in and replaced the steering intermediate shaft (FP number 19153614 Shaft 6.524). Ours was a 05 GMC so it was covered by the warranty. The trucks quiet now.

There is a $2.00 fix for the noise if you're interested. You can put a hose clamp under the dash on the column. It actually eliminates most of the vibration. Sens me a PM if you want it, and I'll send you a picture.

Mine's an 06..... it rattles like crazy and is going in as soon as I get time. I've also developed another GM trademark.... the whining serpentine belt. I'm really just waiting to see what else pops up before the warranty expires so I can get it all done at the same time. I'm sitting at 26K miles right now.... Not to sound unhappy though.. this truck is awsome!!!

Funny you mention the belt whine. DW complains about a chirping noise when the engine is running. Doesn't bother me, as my high frequency hearing is gone. I posted on Diesel Place, and there seems to be an issue with the mounting bolts on the A/C compressor. Not sure if that causes the whine you mention or not. When they replaced the shaft the other day, there shows to be no outstanding campaigns on my VIN, which tells me there is no TSB on the belt issue on my truck. My son has a friend with GMC back home who is supposed to check on it for me. Good luck.

I'm getting alot of interest in this quick fix for the steering column rattle.
Anybody that wants a pic of it, please PM me with your e-mail address, and I'll be glad to forward a picture, which speaks a thousand words on location and end result.
The procedure is: Under your dash if you look up along the steering column towards the dash, you will see a plastic collar, that is circular around the column. It is usually white, but maybe green depending on the year of truck. At that point, take a 2 1/2" or 2 3/4" worm drive hose clamp, open it up, and put it around the steering column. Put the clamp back together, and place it approximately 1/2 over the plastic, and 1/2 on the metal column. Tighten it down well. That's all there is to it, and it in most cases works wonders. Like I said, the picture says a lot.

Thanks Doug. As someone asked me in a PM, please remember: This is not a repair of the problem. It is a band-aid that eliminates the aggravation of the noise and rattle in most cases. The non-effectiveness of dealer installed replacement parts in many cases, and the low level necessity of repairing it makes this an easy alternative. The intermediate shaft is the most common problem, and is not a critical repair item. It has existed for quite a few years on many GM vehicles. Keep on Truckin'!
