Destin, FL Camping on the Gulf
Seeking Information regarding Thanksgiving camping at Camping on the Gulf in Destin, Florida or other closeby gulfside campgrounds (Pensacola, etc.) We usually do Myrtle Beach every year but are getting adventuresome. Has anybody stayed here and have knowledge of whether gulf shore campground sites are hard to come by at Thanksgiving. Will consider all recommendations (preferably with web sites) in the general area. Thanks for any suggestions or guidance that is given.

Topsail Hill State Park is near Destin. It was formerly a private RV resort, but has passed into state ownership. It is a first rate park. Not right on the beach, but there are trams running regularly and a pleasant hike for those who prefer.
Our favorite was Ft. Pickens campground in the Gulf Shores National Seashore, but Ivan (hurricane) wiped it out and the last time I checked it was not open yet after two years or more.
We have moved down the Gulf to St. Andrews State Park near Panama City. It, too, is a wonderful place to stay.

Hi Bingo, if you go to Destin, I'll be jealous. Been there, it's beautiful. If you need a route or some info you know where I'm at. Kerry

Dave and Shirley (Padredw - Sent you a PM for info) may have convinced me to visit St. Andrews. Looked on-line and wow!! Still checking though, Destin as Kerry said looked good too. Decisions, decisions!!

We will be in Destin for a few days starting the 10th of August. We plan on looking at the RV parks while there. (Not taking the RV) We're thinking of spending the winter somewhere in that area if we find something we like. I'll try to remember to come back and post what we find. There are a couple state parks there near Destin, one being Grayton (can't recall the other), but we don't like not having sewer hookups. We'll be looking at the privately owned parks.

We make a trip to Destin every year. Beautiful beach. I would recommend Topsail Hill state park or Henderson Beach state park. Both are great cgs. Camping on the Gulf, while directly on the beach, has very close sites. Topsail or Henderson beat it hands down, and the beach from either is a short bike ride or walk down a paved trail. Topsail does have a tram to ride. Topsail is FHU, Henderson is w/e. I have some pics of both, but I can't figure out how to post a link here. Go to webshots. com, and do a search for cindik646. Click on my shots/albums. We love both of these parks, and wouldn't stay anywhere else in Destin. You can reserve both of these at reserveamerica.com.

DW has insisted on full-hookups, so I guess we will be visiting Topsail for Thanksgiving. Something about galley tank and washing clothes (go figure). Regardless, I definitely appreciate Padredw for making us aware of this great area (Ihave not crossed out St. Andrews for a future visit - it looks too attractive to pass up at some time). Thanks to all for the guidance provided.

Cindik,
Sent you a PM asking for more particular info about the park if you would care to provide it.

Bingo, sure would like to be going to Top Sail. Had resv there two yr's in a row, hurricanes ruined my plans. I do have my directions I took and where I stayed along the way if your interested. Also check out Destin RV Resort, that's where I stayed the first time I went down. Kerry
