Had the same thing happen on my 2004 Chevy duramax. At that time I was running a K&N filter. they replaced the EGR valve under warranty, and then advised me to get rid of the K&N, as they wouldn't cover it a second time. Seems that the intake was drawing some of the oil off of the filter, and plugging up the mass airflo sensor, which through some kind of magic I don't understand casued the EGR valve to go T.U. That is a bottom ogf the gut feeling when you loose power and the smoke starts rolling out! We were vry lucky because I had just fueled up and was still in the fuel bay.
Anyway, after some more research I found that the stock air filter actually flowed more air, cleaner than the KN. go figger!
Have since gotten an 07 durmax chev and the filter in this is Round and bigger.
