Critter Problems
I have a Montana 2955 5er and have a problem with a racoon when I put my cover on the trailer in the storage lot. It crawls up the back ladder under the cover to the roof, makes a mess and rips up my rubber roof. I have tried tack strips, plywood covering on my ladder, moth ball and it still crawls on top of my trailer. My storage yard is not providing any help. I have thought about trying to electrify just the ladder. Has anyone tried that and would it be a fire hazard with my cover? I have also thought about trying to live trap it but know they are such wary creatures it might be hard. Would like any suggestions or comments.

A solar fence changer might work but don’t forget an electric device must have a ground to work. Just putting a wire on a rubber roof won’t do any good. A good fence changer puts out 20,000 volts but won’t shock any thing unless it’s grounded.

The cover is the cause of the problem. We covered the car one season and had similar issues, don’t do that any more.

Agree that covers cause more trouble than any good from them.

Actually a coon is easy to catch. Our neighbor just caught three in my live trap. Get a large one. If it isn’t long enough the door won’t close all the way and he will back out of it. Tractor supply sells three sizes get the largest one and take the coon way away or he will be back before you are.

Put Vicks vapor rub on ladder or part of the roof. They don’t like it at all.

I live trap them in my barn all of the time. They love cat food.

I would either put red axle grease on the lower part of the ladder or get a Duke Coon Trap. Make sure to secure it in a vertical position tightly and connect the chain to something very secure like an iron fence post for barbed wire driven fairly deep. Fill it with black oil sunflower seed. At my house we use sub-sonic 75gr JHP .223 through a suppressed 10.5" Sig (Hollywood quiet). https://beckammunition.com/ammunitio...o/223-subsonic

Poison is a poor choice as it often kills unintended victims as it travels through the food chain or is eaten by a pet.

I don't have a problem with raccoons in my 5er but I do in my dog and cat house. They are easy to trap. Get a live trap, buy a can of chopped clams and some dry cat food. Put both in cans inside a trap, set it on the ground under the ladder and they won't resist. I live in the country and have caught 34 in 4 years. Then take him for a ride and release him some 15 miles away where he won't make his way back. Preferably with a water source between you and him.

In most places it illegal to transport live wildlife so keep it to yourself.

I walk the neighborhood in my Mesa, AZ area. I met a guy a couple of blocks away and we talked about skunks in his yard. Well, he also had racoons. He has a security camera at the front of his house, which has one of the few grass lawns in the area. He killed one, and put it behind his house. A vulture picked it up and dropped it on the street in front. A neighbor saw it and called the wildlife guys. They show up and talk to him. He said 'what can I do with 9 of them in the front lawn'? He showed a video of them. The wildlife guys quietly says 'Just be more careful and don't advertise it!' Apparently they are protected animals in the city limits (maybe the state?). When I was young in FFA we had 'pest' hunts and racoons were one of the top point things to capture. Other things like sparrows, crows, etc too. Apparently there are no pests anymore!!!!

It's usually not illegal if they are a nuisance and it's a lot more humane than killing them.

Do what the governor of Montana said about the wolves “shoot, shove and shut up”.
