I got Screwed
I got screwed 😈 and thought this is a good opportunity to put the 3 year old Spare Tire to work.
Great that also the Spare Tire Carrier worked like charm and it was no big headache to get the Spare Tire out.
BUT looking at the Spare Tire showed this deforming of the Spares Tires Sidewall.
Would you use that Spare?
Anyone had similar experiences?
What does it cause?
Georgia Heat during storage?
Anyone has a solution to put anything between the Carrier and the Spare Tire?
Luckily the screw hit us 8 mls from home after a 500 mls trip from Florida.
I will try to use the spare for a short distance to the storage.
This one will be replaced now.
New Sailuns shall arrive today ( fast !!! )
Better check your Spare Tire too so its available when you need it
Mike

Thats where it rubs against the frame when it is stored. Others have reported the same thing.
Maybe put something between the tire and frame before cranking it up?
I would use it, but replace it ASAP.
I really need to check mine.

Sailuns good move. I would use it but just long enough to get somewhere to get some good tires. I would NOT take any trip with that tire not only because of this problem you can see but also because it is a China Bomb.

Reminds me, I should probably check mine and rotate the tire a little. Also, check the air.

Makes me want to get another type of carrier that doesn't pinch it like that. Good info for everybody to check.

Wow! Thank you for sharing this. I plan to add padding to mine, hoping to prevent this.

There was a previous thread about this same thing, suggestion on that thread was to use a section of swimming noodle on the tubes of the rack. That is what I did and so far no issue with the indentation on the spare tire sidewall.

Why not weld or bolt a wider piece of metal across the angle irons. You would only decrease the clearance by the thickness of the metal. Wood (oak? treated?) would work as well tough the minimum I would use would be 3/4". My spare is carried chained in the truck bed when we travel as I dragged it 2X pretty hard tho with minimal damage except heavy scuffs. I decided a belly mount might be fine for others but not our 5er. I also junked the China Bomb to match the other 4 on-ground tires

I was also thinking to ad a crossmember where the Spare can be screwed on so it does not sit on the bars.
Pool Noodles sounds easy. Will try that.
Btw, Sailuns are now Made in Vietnam.

If that happened to a tire what would happen to a nice soft pool noodle? I think I would go with something more sustainable but I wouldn’t use treated wood. You haft to use special fasteners because it will eat untreated steel up.

Mine started to make small indentions, so I cut up a truckers heavy rubber mud flap and put in between. Problem solved. Still looks good.

Thanks for sharing. This trailer has a different kind of spare carrier than I've had so I need to look at it - maybe use some of the suggestions posted here. I've haven't used a spare in many decades (except one Trailer King blowout) and just usually replace it when I replace the RV tires at 3 years. Don't want to pull that out in the event of an "oh no" moment.

I used a section of old conveyor belt. It will outlast the tire, camper and all of us.
Our local dealer said the Sailuns started coming from Vietnam about mid 2020.

I thought those new type spare tire carriers would be a great improvement over my old hang by a cable crank up type. I guess it really is hard to build a better mousetrap.

I just replaced my spare tire with a new tire and it had the same wear marks from the spare tire mount. Thanks for the recommendations to solve this problem.

I did not seem to have this issue with my spare tire when I removed it to get to the rear sensor for the auto leveler. To me it looks like it the little cable winch was not tightened enough to prevent tire movement. My tire looked fine except it did not say Sailun on it. One thing to be aware of is who ever installed the spare tire did not keep the cable tight or the cable wraps in alignment as the cable had been pulled through the outer cable wraps and was a real PITA to get the spare tire off the holder. Not bad in my driveway but would have been bad along side of a busy highway. Best to check yours at home before heading out on the road.
Happy and safe roads to you.
Tom

Hi,
I went the Pool Noodles route for the Spare Tire to have it sit "softer".
This is for the BAL 'Hide-A-Spare' Tire Storage System not the spindle thing.
Unfortunately I could not test the noodles setup for too long as I just got Nailed this time.
TPMS System is your friend.
This was not 8 mls from home and I was so glad to have a Sailun as Spare Tire
Its good to have an adequate onboard jack though.
On the continued way also a tree hit our TV antenna I hope the series of bad luck is fading away now
Mike
