Navigation
Hi all. We are getting things ready to start our RV life. Is there a navigation system that is good to use with our camper. I have been looking at them but there is so many to choose from

I use the Garmin RV series gps and love it. You can enter in you RV height and weight and it will give you a good route. As with any gps always check the route on a map or other mapping service just to confirm.

No GPS in Truck. I need it all. Mostly I’m looking for one that will take me on routes for RVs. Camp grounds would be nice too

Problem I have with the in-dash gps is that maps outdate and then it is expensive to update them. Garmin is lifetime map updates included in purchase price of many of the units.

Over the years we've used Rand McNally and Garmin RV versions. Currently we have a Garmin and like it better than the Rand McNally. Easier to read with sun on the dash is the biggest thing.

We use the app Co-Pilot for navigating from place to place. We also have the Rand-McNally Trucker's Atlas as a back up.

Waze is great for tooling down the road but you must be careful when pulling as it doesn't take into consideration your rig height. Found that out the hard way with my first Montana. Wound up having to make a U-turn in a small intersection.

Point well taken. That is the point I was trying to make. Waze is great but not an end all be all but it’s free.

Again, depends on exactly what you're looking for. We have the Garmin 785 which includes a Dash Cam function, other models don't. We tried the Rand Tablet and found that once I put on my Prescription Sun Glass I could not longer see the screen. Made sure I didn't have the same issue before purchasing the Garmin.

Get the Garmin RV specific model. Just choose the size you want, they are up to 10" now. Also always set it to fastest time, NEVER shortest distance, that's how you end up in Readers Digest.

We look at GPS a little different. Living in the mountains, unless you download offline maps, things like phone apps don’t work. So, we have the in dash GPS (never had an issue with roads going out of date much. Usually they don’t move them.). We keep an updated Garmin RV 7” and I use the Truck GPS zoomed out and the Garmin zoomed in. For traffic I let the truck GPS reroute me. Otherwise, if there is a disagreement we follow the Garmin. Lately, on the flat land, we’re using Waze on Apple CarPlay. CarPlay is nice if you are trying to find someplace in your contacts. Hope this helps. In the end, it depends on what YOU want it to do.

Waze is only good if you know where you are going. Get a Garmin RV GPS. Set up your height width and weight. You’ll be safer.

We have always had a TomTom, which works very well when you get within the last few miles and you have no clue where you are going. If taking a long route, it has a tendency to take you through some wild-haired roads that don't make a lot of sense sometimes. After all these years, I still haven't figured out why it does what it does. We are on our 3rd one.
We also use the maps on our smart phones, Google Maps and directions in conjunction with TomTom. Sometimes, it's just a lot easier to use the phones. And of course, GasBuddy.com on your phone is priceless for finding fuel stations. (check it out).
Along with all of this, when trip planning, initially, we always confide in a paper map, or a trucker's road atlass. Rand McNalley make pretty good ones. Between the three, we always get to where we are going.
The nice thing about TomTom is, we can punch in the final destination point. Then when we are out exploring and it's been a long day and need to get back to the campsite, we can just flip on TomTom and it points right back to the camper. No need to fumble around with the Google Maps again, punching in an address all over again.
Never, never, never, never get dependent upon technology for your travel directions. Always hang on to your paper maps. They don't fail or loose internet or satellite signals!

Garmin RV series is great! Enter your height, weight and length (including TV) and it finds the best routes. I also use RVTripWizard. $35 a year and great for trip planning.

I use RV Life which allows you to plan your entire trip based on RV height and length, including fuel stops etc. It gives you distances according to the number of hours you want to drive and mpg of your tow vehicle. Once everything is mapped out it sends it to the GPS part of the app for all stops. I use it to plan all my trips and use Waze along with it for stopped vehicles and traffic.

Garmin RV series of GPS units. Not cheap but they work very well.
