Whatever works for you is the best way.
I blow out the lines with the HW heater not isolated, then isolate it and use the on board pump to draw that pink stuff through the lines. Without a washer, permanebt filter and ice maker, and saving some for the traps I use a bit over a gallon and a quarter. If you don't use that on board pump, you risk ice failure of it as well as the attached filter.
I found that dewinterizing the system via the on board pump, a clean 5 gallon bucket of potable water and winterizing port will remove almost all of the residual pink stuff taste
After having a TT without a winterizing port, will never add pink stuff to the fresh tank - bleeehhh. It took probably a couple hundred gallons of water to flush that tank that had a low point drain that left a half inch of evil stuff in the bottom.
