Propane transport/storage
Morning everyone. Well I’m ordering the propane generator and with that since I already have extra multiple 30lb tanks I want to bring some along. Originally I had thought to mount 2 tanks in the basement storage but since thought that would not be a good idea. So while towing I can have them in the back of the truck strapped in no problem, when we drop the trailer I don’t want to keep carrying them as they stick out the back and the folding cover won’t close. I guess at that point I can place in the basement....
What do you all suggest...?
Thanks, Tony

I carry a 3rd - 30 lbs propane tank all the time. I actually use it the most with my Coleman cook stove on the picnic table. But, I also have it for a back-up for cold weather camping when one of the regular propane tanks run empty.
For the last 2 years, I've been transporting it the pass-through. It's right in the middle of everything with folding chairs on one side, and plastic storage bins on the other. I imagine it can wiggle some, but it definitely cannot fall over. I use it every time we camp, and when stowing away, make absolutely sure it's closed tight.
Maybe that is not the best solution, but it works for me. Like you, I have a cover on the bed of my truck and it's already full with 2 portable generators, boards for leveling, blue tote, sewer hoses, floor jacks, ladder, a gigantic orange road construction cone, gasoline, and 2 ramps. Plus the fifth wheel hitch. No room for much else. Attaching it to the rear of the trailer, even though I have a hitch and a flat carrying cage, I'm not hanging anything off this 41 foot behemouth. (too much bouncing back there). So the pass-through has to work for me. I could use the front bay, as it's got holes in the floor and vented better, but it's the dedicated space for other items, like a 35 gallon water tank, firewood and chains.

I think I had a tank that leaked from the little drain screw by the valve. I read somewhere I think, that they can go bad. So even with the valve securely tightened, you could still get a leak.

They can pop off some propane as they get warm. If you have them in an invented area guess what can happen. I saw the picture of what was left of a pickup that after a propane tank leaked and blown up. It took the whole bed off the truck and most of the cab. What would it do to you and your camper if that happened to you?

When I was fulltiming for work in the winter I had 2 extra 30# and 2 extra 20#. I put them all (plus the originals) under the fifth wheel and ran a cable through them with a lock.
I bought gas line extensions so I wouldn't have to lift them in and out of the compartment all winter.

Having them in the storage area is best logistically, but I don’t want to die either lol.

As a retired firefighter I would not store flammables in the basement. A better alternative would be to mount a hitch receiver to the front pin box and then to put a cargo carrier into the receiver and put the propane on the carrier.

I have stands for the tanks I can put in the back of the truck or the basement, makes the tanks really stable.

Why not get a couple of 40# Tanks and mount in place of the 30's. I did that to our 2010 2955RL and only had to move up the holding straps a couple inches to be closer to the center height of the 40# tanks.

Same here with the 40# tanks but with a generator even these tanks won't last long.

I have a total of 6 30lb tanks so just trying to use what I have. I really want to keep them in the basement but common sense is telling me not to.

I usually carry a couple of extra 20# tanks when I go hunting. They can easily be exchanged since there is no where close to have tanks filled. I have those plastic tank foot things that make them sit upright and very stable. I carry them in the pass through basement which is directly behind the wall adjacent to my 30# tanks that came with the unit. How would this be any more dangerous than that? They are within an inch of the other tanks only separated by a piece of plywood.

But the Propane compartment is generally open at the bottom for ventilation, not so your basement compartment.

Your basement is enclosed so the propane can’t escape. The bottom of your propane storage is open and propane is heavier than air so it settles to the ground and prevents a loud boom that takes the front of your camper off.

When we went from MD to WY last year we carried two extra 30lb tanks. Strapped them in the back of the truck sitting in a crate for stability. When we got to the camp ground we would run a cable lock through them if we needed the truck bed closed. It worked out well in that we ran out of propane on two occasions due to running our gen as we drove through SD where the temp was over 100 and we needed to keep RV cool for cats that were riding in it. RV never got above 75 according to our two Bluetooth temp gauges. But after 6 hours of driving the propane was spent and the campground we were staying at was unable to fill tanks so having the extra two full really helped.

I transport two 20lb tanks in the bed of the truck. After we arrive at our destination I remove them. Usually they are used for Camp Chef stove and propane heater. I also have them in the round plastic Tank Feet.

Point taken. I guess I've been lucky. They will fit in the bed of the truck in front of the hitch. I usually don't put anything there due to heavy snow that time of year.

A plastic milk crate holds lp bottles perfectly. Very stable.
