Save yourself the grief and false sense of security and buy an EMS from either Progressive or a Surge Guard. You will have more damage from poor voltage conditions than you will from a ‘surge’. High or low voltage or a miss-wired pedestal is much more likely than a surge. One instance of a voltage issue will cost many times more than the cost of a good EMS.

I use the Progressive 50 amp EMS hardwired . I have used the Surge-Guard 50 amp portable and it was very good also. The Progressive seems to be the most popular on this site but both are popular and very good. It certainly is easier to just plug in the portable and you can take it with you from one rv to another. My hardwire Progressive has the remote monitoring screen inside the rv installed over the thermostat and is easy to keep tabs on the voltage. You can't go wrong with either one. As Bob said you will have more problems with low voltage than high voltage or surge. I have experienced low voltage and miss wired pedestals and this is the time of the year for all these a/c's running to get low-voltage. I lost a microwave from low voltage before i bought my first surge protector.

I have the surge guard, the model right before they came out with the Bluetooth version. It has saved my butt several times during a storm in Huston.

Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X Portable RV Surge Protector. I have 2 and have had no problem's with either of them. Before you buy one, check to see if you have one all ready installed in your unit. Some package's have surge protection installed.

I have Progressive because they have a longer warranty than Surge Guard. However, when snooping around, I noticed Surge Guard has a long warranty now too.
I had good results with both types.

here is the unit that came on my 2020 3931fb https://www.progressivedyn.com/rv/au...he-silent-ats/ i just recieved a new one yesterday, the original went bad and the transfer switch would not close electrically. the tech at progressive said this was rare and that they would send me a new one and i have to send back the old one within 30 days(on my dime!) this is a surge transfer switch, i do not think it will protect against low voltage or high voltage like an ems. i installed a hardwire 50amp ems just before the transfer switch. not sure i am going to install the new transfer switch, no on board generator and do not plan on putting one in. got a junction box and will just eliminate the tsfer switch. when it went bad i almost lost everything in my freezer as we use that for extra
space while at home.

I bought the Hughes Autoformer 50 amp. For me the selling point was replaceable surge module and Bluetooth connectivity. It does diagnostics on the condition of the incoming power also. It pricy but occasionally you can find them on sale.

I just bought one for our new (to us) 2019 Monty love it! Best rated and did not care to scrimp on the price considering the cost of all of the electronics in these things.
Best wishes!

Another vote for Progressive Industries! We had the 50 amp hard-wired version installed when we bought the fifthwheel; got the monitoring panel installed in the switch cabinet.
Over 2 RVs, Progressive Industries has saved us from: numerous low voltage conditions, any number of miswired power pedestals, power surges, and one memorable campground where the motorhome next to us shorted out all appliances and had an electrical fire due to the bad wiring.

WE got the monitoring panel too - very useful and easy to identify if there is an issue ... love ours.

I have the Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X Portable. Been very pleased with it. It's shut down my power several times now.
I also have a portable 30 amp Hughes Autoformer that I used on my former travel trailer. I keep it for those times we have only 30 amp hook up. It's saved the day a few times too.
Both are good.
