The Dogs Spot
Just wondering how everyone transports their pouch? Since it is only my wife & I the dog gets the back seat, so in the interest of making it safer this was my solution. Tried to keep it simple, 1/2" plywood with a plywood support leg on a piano hinge. It tilts back about an inch & is covered with some indoor/outdoor carpet, folds flat for storage & has a strap & snap to stay closed. When traveling we use a body harness tethered into the seat belt, not the choker which gives him enough room while being safe. The platform is also great when we need a little more indoor storage plus there is still room below it on the floor.

I just made something very similar last weekend, but on our Ram truck bottom of the seat folds up so I put the platform on the floor. Took a 2'x4' piece of plywood, stapled on padding and carpet, then only had to put two 6" pieces of 2x4 on a gate hinge for legs on the one side. Worked well and it was easier for him to get in since the ramp wasn't angled so high.

He would too if he could, but at 90lbs he needs his own spot.

We have one of those hammocks that attach to the head rests in the front and back seats. We throw in a bed and she is somewhat happy. She wants to be up in the front seat with us. After a 10 minutes of growling and barking she gets the idea.

Ours wears a harness and just sits in the backseat. Without the harness she is in my lap.
Before Olive passed to the great hunting ground, she liked to drive.

Our boy curls in the back seat in a harness 99% of the time. The other 1% he is on my wife's lap.

Der dogs
We went thru 2 platforms with previous truck and decided to try two of these foam inserts that fit behind the front seats from Orvis. See the black thing on the floor. I level out the seat with some blankets and cover with an old carpet runner. It works better than the platforms. My young Aussie weighs 70 lbs. The old female weighs 50 lbs. it works good for us. The back seat of our 2003 Chevy was much better because it folded into a complete flat deck.

The cat rides where it wants, no matter where the bed is.

Our four (three Lowchen and a Bouvier des Flandres) ride in the back seat. The seats are down so it is a flat deck. Two pet beds cover it. We have the cargo net between front and back areas. They are happy and good travelers, except Sami who wants to be on my lap and takes awhile at the start of each trip to accept that it won't happen.

Jeffba, how much does your pooch weigh? I’ve seen the hammocks but we have two (13 & 25 lbs.) and wondered if it would work for them.

We have had a pair of 13 pounds dogs and it has handled them just fine. Its main purpose is to catch loose fur and keep them from ending up on the floor if hard braking was needed. It does both of those jobs well.

Well after a 600 mile trip the only upgrade will be adding some padding below the carpet rather than a bed on top. The nice thing is it goes in & out in seconds when you need to put people back there. I keep a milwaukee cordless blower in the box & just blow out the cab for a quick clean, works great for stoking the fire also!

Our Ram has the platform for us, but since wife works in dog rescue we also have the pet seatbelts that attach seatbelt mechanism to their harnessses. A good friend of hers had her dog on her lap and was t-boned. The dog didn’t survive either. The dog (she had just picked up into rescue) that was seatbelted in the backseat did live. Watch a few YouTube videos about what happens to animals in accidents and it really makes you think.
Good luck with whatever you come up with.
