Tire Pressure
Several months ago I had a Goodyear 614 tire go flat. Caught it early because of a Pressure Pro warning. Told by a dealer that it was a valve stem (metal) that went bad. These PROs said that the pressure should be at 80lbs cold so that is what I had them set (Although I had been maintaining them at 110). Now I am having a broken aluminum rim replaced. Is the pressure indeed wrong and is the broken rim related?

Tire inflation pressures are HOT topics and numerous opinions will be given here. I'm just going to stick the basics and tell it as it's supposed to be.
In accordance with SAFECAR documents, the correct cold inflation pressures for your trailer's Original Equipment tires is found in the trailer's owner's manual, on the federal certification label or on a tire load/inflation placard.
The tire industry says to NEVER use less cold inflation than what has been recommended for the OE tires by the vehicle manufacturer. (Anyone in the tire industry telling you to use less than recommended is a poorly trained employee).
The tire industry also says any tire found to be operating at 20% below recommended inflation is in a "run flat" condition.
My recommendation, don't fool around with RV trailer tire inflation pressures. They have been designed to run at full sidewall pressures. Why do less than recommended by both industries?
They should have been able to tell you what caused the wheel failure. I doubt it had anything to do with inflation pressures, unless, those G614 tires were replacements. The brochure for the G614 tires clearly states the tire must be fitted to special high load capacity/inflation pressure wheels.

when i bought SOB years ago, told dealer that G614 had to be added, he said no problem, i came to pick up and the rims had not been changed, still had rubber valve stems, after i explained to him that those are 80psi rims for 110psi tires, he said he needed to call the SOB factory, didn't believe me, what a dumb ass.

I've had two of my rims crack running at 110 psi. Most likely you hit a pot hole or very rough transition in the road to crack your rim. I've changed out all my wheels now to Modular wheels and am very pleased with them even though I don't have but a few thousand miles on them. The Mobile Suites have Modular wheels on them and are heavier than ours so hopefully these will hold up. I always run max pressure of 110 psi but there are some on this forum run less for a better ride but I am more concerned with my tires running cool. I paid 99.00 per wheel plus shipping so these wheels are not that expensive but look much nicer and stronger than the factory wheels. Only time will tell how they hold up.

New 614 tires and one new rim (mismatch) are going on today. All will be balanced and a torqued properly. The bearings have been repacked and suspension inspected. All take note: the tire guy had one hell of a time taking the old ones off because some ignorant owner (moi) let a previous installer go with only an impact wrench. That owner had not heeded this site's suggestions. Bad owner, bad, bad owner.

Several factors to consider. Were G-rated tires on the original build? If not, the rims may not be up to the higher pressure used in the G-rated tire. That could explain the rim damage. My OEM rims were rated for 110 psi so I had no problem when I upgraded from E-rated Marabombs to G-rated G614s. I run them at 110 psi. No problems with 50,000 miles on the 614s. Any good wheel shop can get you a new set of rims for a reasonable price.

Had Marathon 80psi on 2010 monty. Blew one and belt broke on other less than 1200 miles. Goodyear dealer called home office and gave me 125.00 credit for 5 614. Checked rims and all rated for 110 psi (dealer would not put them on till he checked). Run them at 104-106psi. Never had a problem.. Going on 6 years..no splits/cracks or chinking. No pressure loss. Feel more relaxed driving down the road.

Time to replace your tires. Even Goodyear says they are only good for 5-7 years. Several of us have had 614's blow, without warning, at 6 years old. In our case the one that blew took out the one behind it.
