Diesel fuel additive such as Standyne
I have a 2017 GMC Denali diesel and I’m wondering if it’s a good idea to keep on adding a diesel additive such as standyne. I always added it to the 2011 GMC diesel that I used to have. I bought the 2017 a year ago and added standyne every 2nd fill, but now I wondering if i’m Wasting money by buying the additive because the service area of the dealership told me 2017 trucks don’t require a diesel additive. Appreciate your thoughts.

This always becomes a topic of major debate on many forums. I ran Stanadyne Performance formula in both of my Dmax and VW TDI engines. Now that I'm running a Cummins I don't. There is no real reason other than I just decided not to use it. I do not have to worry about my fuel in cold temperatures given my location. Since you are in a cold climate you may want to use something to prevent fuel gelling. Other than that I think it's really up to what makes you happy.

If you read up on the lubricity requirements for bosch high pressure fuel pumps you will discover that the fuel sold here in the US does NOT meet its lubricity requirements. IMHO using an additive just for that reason alone keeps me doing it. I have been using Optilube in every tank for over 5 years. Cheap insurance if you ask me.

And don’t forget Bosch makes all of these HP fuel systems. These systems run at up to about 30,000 PSI. They are very fragile and will not tolerate any abuse.

I have been running diesels for years and have never added anything to them. I have one GMC 2007 model with over 240K miles on it.

I have a 2017 3500 Duramax and used Standyne additive thru last winter.No problems what so ever and no codes.

I use Opti lube, makes me feel better. I’ve been using the summer blend but now our weather is getting into the winter mode I’ll be buying the Opti lube XPD

I only add cetane to mine. I believe in the cold states they add something to the diesel in the winter so it won't gel.

I've used additives in my diesel engines for over forty years, both in trucks and ag applications. Over the years I've used Power Serve, Howse, Hot Shot usually whatever is on sale at the local farm store. I run it in every other tank during the summer and usually every tank during the winter as we get a lot of days in the teens. A good friend of mine who is a German national that has a degree in mechanical engineering just adds a quart of ATF to every other tank. He swears it detergent additives keep the injectors clean and lubed. Knock on wood, I've put thousands of hours on diesels and have never had an injector or pump issue. I believe keeping fuel filters changed, as well as water traps drained is just as important as any additive.

I have read that also on a few diesel forums.I have used the Standyne since last year when I bought the truck new.The GM dealers seem to frown on any additives with this new LP5 Duramax which is computer sensitive and throws a lot of check engine light with codes.This new engine in 2017 I don’t want to give them anything to mess with the warranty.I haven’t had any issues or codes but I’am going with the same additive that seems to work so far.

It you add anything, it should be proprietary and so stated, otherwise you may void the warranty. These new engine tolerances are very specific.

This is exactly what we are told by RAM - do NOT use additives or the warranty (including any extended) will be void! We are strict about the maintenance and very please with the truck's performance.

I’am aware but last winter the fuel gelled up on me and thru the winter I continued and will this winter.I had no issues or any codes.
I’am not one to push the issue and do go by what they say but when my truck shut off then started for a few minutes and respeated leaving me on the highway due to the fuel in the filter gelled.Only 6000 miles factory filter.I change every 10,000 miles since and additive in winter.

You all can do what you want to do but I encourage you all to learn about the lubricity requirements of Bosch high pressure fuel pumps. THE FUEL SOLD HERE IN THE USA DOES NOT MEET THIER REQUIREMENTS......

True!
The cost of replacing these fuel systems is $6000 to $8000. When the high pressure fuel pump goes bad it takes out the whole system the lines they are one time use lines and all of the injectors. Ouch!

I think you are little low Linwood (LOL) , I met a guy at Talladega that spent 12k to fix his 2012 6.7 fords fuel system only to have the motor spin a bearing 3 weeks later. And what blows mind about that, is that he had the motor replaced and then traded it in on another 6.7 of the same year. There is no way I would have ever bought another ford (or whatever brand screwed me like that)

I was talking about the fuel system not the engine. Bad stuff does happened to all of them but it’s extremely rare especially to replace an engine.

The new Duramax L5p doesn’t use a Bosch high pressure fuel pump.

Ford states in their manuals to use Ford PM-22 for lubricity. Now many other additives meet the same requirements as the PM-22 such as Power Services Diesel Kleen(both white and gray bottles) Stanadyne and OptiLube just name a few.
