Towing Your SUV Behind 5th
We have a 17 3160RL and will be moving to Ca in December for Work the next two years or more, so we will be full timing in our Montana. Has anyone double towed, I know the length limits are 80’ max and I’d still be under my tow limit. I guess the question is where would I start looking to find out if our 5th is able to add a hitch and what the tow limits would be.

In my opinion that is a lot of weight to be towing and putting stress on the frame of the 5er. Being that your out of the warranty period you can do what ever you want.

Correct me if I am wrong. But I don't think it's 80 feet I always thought it was 65 feet.
Yep just looked it up 65 feet.

Ditto 65’
And it would be FAR safer to drive the SUV separately if your married.
I used to tow 4 down behind our motor home and I have towed a small aluminum boat behind a 5er BUT towing an SUV behind a 5er sounds like a recipe for something bad to happen

Although I've towed jetskis and a small squirt boat for years behind 3 different Montana's … I'd not recommend anything as heavy as what you are proposing. If you ever get up above the belly pan, you'll see the 10 / 12" IBeam frame and several crossmembers seemingly randomly placed consisting of around 1/4" round stock zig zagging between formed upper and lower sheet metal angle pieces. I think the wood flooring screwed to the IBeams adds as much structure holding it all together as anything else under there.

I saw someone at an RV park in Colorado with a car trailer behind his long 5er and a beautifully restored early 60’s Pontiac convertible on the trailer. Looked like a lot of weight and a lot of length. And I have seen some very large boats behind 5ers. Not something I would do. But some do it.

Yep every time I see something like that the old saying “there goes an accident waiting to happen” comes to mind

In California you would be required to have a class A license as well. My brother got stopped for double towing and was required to drop the toad and got a hefty fine for not having the proper license and being over the 65 feet limit.

I do have a class A license, with doubles and triples and hazardous endorsements. I had it for 20 years.

You still need to check. My understanding, possibly incorrect, is that double towing with a 5th wheel is not legal in any state on either the east or west coast. It is ok in most, if not all, the states in the middle.

It would depend on the manufacture of the 5th if they are rated to tow and if so how much the rating is. Anyways we’re not chasing this down and the wife will just follow me.

Not sure about the length, nor the laws on double towing. If all that passed the test, I would be concerned on the side load on the frame of the trailer. They are marginally stressed for the trailer load let alone the side load a four wheel vehicle could put on it in sharp turns. Bill

Multiple red flags come up with this question. First, double towing is not legal in all states so do your homework on that. I saw that others disputed the 80' total length. I agree, 65' is closer to the truth. Finally and perhaps most important, this kind of towing will void the warranty on your Monty.

Not something I would consider. The frames on these campers are built as light as possible and I doubt they would safely support the additional stress of pulling a car.

Towing two "trailers" is illegal in some states. Two of those are Alabama and Florida.
