Suggestions for surge guards
What are y’all’s thoughts on surge guards (type, design and brand)?

Progressive Industries HW50C. This is the hardwired unit with remote. This is the total electrical management system. This has an lifetime warranty and is easy to install.I installed the remote just above my thermostat so i could monitor the electricity. The cheapest place on the web right now i believe is Tweety's for 291.57. Just remember you want to monitor everything and not just surge. You can do just as much damage with low voltage as high voltage. Found out the hard way. Most important is to have protection. You can go hardwire or portable and i have done both. Both have pros and cons.

I use the Progressive portable line conditioner and it does well but I suffered some damage to the RV when I lost the neutral in the anaconda cord.
If you plan on keeping the trailer for the next 10 years the hardwire one is better.

That's the advantage of the hardwire. You protect the rv from it's own power cord. The bid advantage to the portable is you can keep it for the next rv where as it's doubtful someone would remove the hardwire from there rv for the next rv. Probably no wrong choice here except if you make no choice at all.

Portable progressive for us. In a hard to get in spot we can check before we back in. Also, we've had progressive EMS for 8 years of full timing and have had one go bad after 7 years and had it replaced by them free, even the shipping.

surge guard
We have a portable 50 amp surge guard that I have used on the past 2 RVs.
I would like to do a hard-wired protector but I am "challenged" when it comes to electrical knowledge and know-how. Every time I start reading a thread on the subject of surge protectors or electrical stuff my eyes go crossed...but you never know...I may just be stupid enough to try tackle it some day.

Don't be skeerd. There are a lot of things challenging on these rv's.I did mine and the hardest part was handling the 6 ga. wire.I had to install mine in the basement and it was hot weather at the time so my biggest problem was staying cool. Just be sure to use an junction box if it is needed. Where i made my cut in the basement to install the progressive box i added 2' of 6 ga. wire and made my connection in the box using plastic box i think 4''x4''.

Portable can be moved from rig to rig and will let you check the plug in before pulling into spot.

Tires and Electrical Management System are the 2 most important safety features you can install on your rv with Disc Brakes coming in a close 3rd.
