Florida Keys?
Looking into the future when I am finally able to retire I would love to check out the Florida Keys in my Monte. I would be curious if anyone on here is a regular in the Keys, or whether anyone has attempted the trip?
My questions...how expensive?....RV’s welcome? ....etc.

I haven't been but I understand one should plan well ahead and have deep pockets.

Four years ago we were in the keys for a week, $180 a night if I remember correctly, at the KOA, now closed for repairs because of storm damage.

We went to the Keys several years ago. We stayed at Bluewater Keys Resort in 2011. It was an owner park, but people rent out their sites thru someone staying there full time. I am not sure, but I think it was $70 per night. A small place and mostly empty in October. But right in the water on a kind of penninsula. Each site had it's own dock, I think and also a little Cabana with a table, etc and grill. I think it had a shower room and bath house but we didn't use it.

Most south FL CGs will be full for the winter season by mid-April every year. Current campers get 1st dibs on a site the following year and usually reserve prior to departing. Around April 1st reservations for remaining sites open and within a couple weeks the sites are filled and a long waiting list is in hand. A few sites are available farther north and in the center of the state. I heard Lloyds was $140 nightly last year. Not as nice as Bluewater. Check them out in summer and you have a good chance as it is too warm for most and snowbirds are not there.

1. you need to call ahead, probably 6 months to a year.
2. plan on a high cost, figure about $200 a night to be safe.
3. i would not consider the keys at this point, maybe next year.
4. if you are a retired veteran you can always use the key west naval base and dry camp at $15 a night....but it won't be opened until mid december.

Going to the keys with our monte has been on our bucket list too. Just three weeks ago we took the Key West Express from Ft. Myers to Key West. It saved driving the long road from Miami through the Keys. So glad we did it because I wouldn't recommend it with a camper. Two lane road only, if any accidents or hiccups you sit. No way to exit or get off road. Area is crowded and very expensive. Finding available campsites very, very difficult. Save your money and time and consider another mode of transportation if you are really set on seeing the Keys.

I live here, I agree with everything that has been said so far, especially about being expensive. US-1 is horrible, in fact just today a car southbound stopped on US-1 waiting to turn left, a large septic pump truck rear ended the car forcing the car to cross in front of a large new model Allegro motorhome, the MH struck the car broad side, another car rear ended the MH, the car after the MH hit it broad side continued on and ended up striking a tree. Sadly 3 people lost their lives and many injured. This has been an almost daily occurrence less the fatalities, delaying traffic for numerous hours till the crash scene is investigated and cleared. Too many people on the road along with those with little patience trying to get where they are going in a hurry causing most of the problems. If you come down I suggest traveling at night if by vehicle, fly or take the ferry. Enjoy.

The Keys are expensive, but it is a trip everyone should make at least once.
