I do not carry DEF with me. I check the level indicator every couple of weeks. When it says you are at less than 1/2 full it will take a 2 1/2 gallon container. It will also give you a warning when you have appx 800 miles left till empty. Enjoy your truck. I have a new one ordered with delivery currently scheduled for June 12
