Diesel fuel in Northern states

We're finished camping for the year and have winterized our Montana but I'm new to diesel trucks and I know I should use our truck on a regular basis throughout the winter to keep it in good shape. I have heard that you can have lots of problems starting and using diesels in cold weather. Do they blend a better diesel fuel in northern states for winter use? Should I be adding a fuel additive? Any hints?
