Mor/Ryde Independent Suspension Install
Before I headed out West I made a quick long weekend trip up to Goshen/Elkhart to get some warranty work taken care of. While I was up there I also decided to bite the bullet and get the upgraded Mor/Ryde IS & Disc Brakes installed.
Also while I did that I decided to move up to 17.5" wheels and G 114's
While there I posted on my blog for my regular readers and just thought that perhaps some of you on the MOC might be interested in seeing the install.
Here is a link to day 1 and day 2 at Mor/Ryde
http://eilean350.blogspot.com/2012/1...yde-day-1.html
http://eilean350.blogspot.com/2012/1...yde-day-2.html
I have to say that after almost 4,000 miles, the rig handles and stops like a dream. Everything stays on the counters where they were left. The folks at Mor/Ryde are consummate professionals and a pleasure to work with.
With the new disc brakes I can stop the rig as quick as I can without the trailer. What a difference! The new load range H Tires just add one more level of reserve.
I purchased the wheels and tires from Trailer Tire and Wheels in Ohio and they too were a class act. They delivered them to Mor/Ryde and were waiting for me when I arrived, mounted, polished and balanced.

If they put you in the one stall in the back, what did you think about looking out the door at 5am to see grinding and welding?

It was all sort of surreal. I never "camped" overnight inside a factory.
Fortunately I'm an early riser so as soon as the lights came on I was out and about.

I'd love to have the IS and disk brakes. As soon as I can convince my wife to write one of our kids out of the will....

It would be something if the whole Lippert frame was built to the structural quality level of the Mor/Ryde IS. We had the X-factor installed there and agree that the customer service and workmanship is great. Another couple was having the IS installed during our stay. I think they said the height of the rig was raised a few inches by the new suspension. They were heading from there down to Mexico. Enjoy your newly updated Montana Thanks for sharing the photos and write up.

In doing so it raised my rig 2" as well. The issue was they needed to clear the kitchen waste drain.
I was fine with that and actually wanted them to raise me as I only had about 4" of clearance between the 5'ver and my truck rails and actually scraped the bottom of the bedroom last year up in Wyoming boondocking.
I was sitting level front and rear so by raising me 2" I got the clearance that I wanted on the truck bed sides. My clearance on the front A/C is now 13' 3" We measured again before I left.

Great setup Greg. I hope to see it at Q. I would like to do about the same thing. Was it the tires that raised the rig or was it the IS system? The 2" would help.

Joe, the IS system did it. The difference between the G614's and the G114's is only a 1/4 inch. The 114s are a lower ratio so even though the 17.5 wheel is an inch and a half larger, the sidewall on the 114 is less and it comes out almost identical. I actually kept my g614 as a spare rather than buying a fifth wheel and tire.
Looking forward to seeing you at Q.

What is the distance between the "axles". Is it the same as the 16" wheels?

If you mean due to the IS install.... That's a good question and I don't know. It is close I'm sure as it looks the same but cant say for sure. Mor/Ryde could tell you that or perhaps someone else here who had the conversion might know.
If you mean due to the new wheels/tires then the difference would be about .4 inches. The G114 mounted on the 17.5 is actually .2 inches LESS in diameter than the G614
The 215/75R 17.5H G114 is 30.5" diameter where as the LT235/85R16 G is 30.7" diameter.

The distance between the wheels is pretty much the same stock vs MorRyde IS, EXCEPT with the OEM suspension the distance changes depending on the actual weight carried on the axles. If you have the Level-UP you find if you use the X-chocks they will fall out once the system jacks the rig up to level. With the MorRyde IS the wheels stay the same distance regardless of the weight. Thus with the Level-up and x-chocks they remain tight even when leveled. We had the IS installed after last years Rally and plan to have it installed on our SOB this spring along with the 17.5 wheels and G114 tires.

The IS is about $2,500
Add disc brakes is about another $2,600 depending on what hubs you want. I went with good old fashioned grease em yourself hubs.
Then I got a 10% winter discount because they were slow during the Thanksgiving-Christmas Time.
I paid about $2,600 for the 4 Alcoa Wheels and G114's mounted, balanced, & delivered. I then sold my 4 G614's and wheels for $1,000 so I netted out around $5,800-6,000 all done after the discount.
Not cheap but overall I think the upgrade is well worth the money if you are putting lots of miles on each year like we do.
It will save wear and tear on the rig, the interior, and the safety factor for us is important.

Greg (or anyone else with IS), did they tell you how to go about jacking up the trailer in the event of a flat? I'm thinking similar to with tube axles, but I'm curious to know for sure.

It more than likely depends on when you purchased it. We got ours in 2003 for $1700.

Good question. I'm sure that you can jack it up on the member that was welded to the frame but I sent Mor/Ryde an email asking just to be sure.

Had the IS system on the 06 3400. This 2013 3402 Big sky does not have it and we noticed real quick the big difference,We will get it on this 2013.

I just heard from Mor/Ryde and they sent me a pdf with instructions.
You can jack up on a certain part of the suspension - too complicated to try and describe in this format - but it's a simple process once you know where to (and not to) jack from.
